I can totally see why this happens.
In github wikis you have at least 5 markup languages and I don't particularly like either.
I like most stuff about markdown except how they treat 1 line break as 0 line breaks.
I would want to take a txt file and spice it up with some headings and bolds without having to enter double line breaks. -
Hah, well I'm going to create yet another markup language! And I'll call it...

Follow up to my previous comment about searching for a markdownish language that respects line-breaks and is suitable for "spicing up a txt file"
For githubwikis I've started using Textile.
It respects line-breaks. Has similar syntax to markdown when it comes to the most basic stuff like bold, list, emphasis. But has a very different syntax for stuff like links, images and headings.
I find it quite hard to remember the syntax for links and images...so not crazy about it but the nice thing about githubwikis is that you can select a markuplanguage per page so I can use it only in a handful of cases if I want to.
