!RANT

I've invested so much time in PHP and now people are telling me it's rubbish ?? 😧😰😢😢

C'mon ! Trying to learn (or get familiar) with a whole new language now will basically mean I'm going back to square 1. That helpless feeling of being a beginner at something 😢

JavaScript, here I come .

If it helps PHP 7 is a lot faster and competes on benchmarks against other languages. I am not a PHP fan but it is still a functional language heavily used all over the web. Learning PHP will also aid you in picking up a second language faster. You will learn different techniques by learning more than one language because they require a different style.

Yeah, people complain about it, but it's all over the web; it's definitely a useful skill to have :)

It more square 2. You already have learnt "programming logic" new language is just a new perspective to the same problems

Every language has some use, at least for you, if you learned it yourself. Else you hadn't learned it, i guess?

You find this "why x is shit" bullshit for every language actually. There is no non-plus ultra, there is only a correct choice for you or the team.:b

@Artemix I'm with you on this one yas!

@sayopaul It depends what you consider yourself as, a PHP programmer or software engineer. It is always good to be an expert on a single area and also learn to work on others. In your case, I would suggest you embrace working and learning other languages, it might also help your PHP skills. Also, don't listen to the haters, but also bear in mind that every language was usually built with a specific purpose in mind. So weigh the pros and cons of every language.

To be honest I real hate php , oh god I do, but almost all my clients depend on php so I got to go with the flow, FYI php 7 is great , and if an elien from out of space call me to ask about php this is exactly what I will say .

    @Jase well said 👏👏

Get used to being a beginner over and over again. Deliberately make yourself a beginner every now and then. That's how you become a master.

Don't let others tell you what sucks.

If it works for you it works for you.

I never would looked into PHP if i wouldnt have peeked before into visual basic...

Learn one, learn two, learn three and then it will be just the difference in syntax and specifics. It's much easier if you know the general concepts.

And yeah, get used to it. Learning is basically half of a dev's life.

@lig1 I definitely agree with you on the fact that we should always be open to new avenues or languages...

Every language is created keeping a specific thing in mind..

And, even though, I am not a big time user of PHP.. But, still it is a valuable language to learn..

But, I found your first statement a little bit offensive...

Yeah people hate on PHP, but people hate on everything. PHP is a perfectly fine language to start with, you can take those skills to learn more languages.

Personally I love PHP and I hate JavaScript. But my hatred doesn't change the fact that I need to know it in order to do my job.

I shared your frustrations, but now I just use what works for me and if that's PHP then the haters can ......off 😁

@SuyashD95 Suddenly I don't care. I think that some people need a bit of a shake from time to time to start to actually develop their self.
  • 1
@lig1 Isn't that true for everyone??

What I gather from your statement, in retrospect, is that you wish to say that instead of switching from one language to another...

We should instead spend time with it and get comfortable with developing in them...

If it's indeed your advice, then, it's a good one...

    Otherwise, correct me...

I once sat in some kind of an advanced bootcamp with 20 more people, and we got some php code to look at. I was the only one to know php among them so I suddenly became an expert. In computer science every skill you have will be in use one day.

And also you could give up on node.js and write your backend with php. I suppose it will be even a better idea for a beginner. Then when you finish learning the front end part you can move to python for the backend to learn another useful language on the way.
