Cyanite84918yAs for me.. I eat up TBs left and right.. I need to add a thirt one to my system. (then again, mine is a gaming rig, so..)
-
yusijs12508y@Cyanite yeah that's fair, I've got 12 tb or smtn at home (nas + main pc), but this is work. And it's for frontend web development. Kinda wtf.
-
yusijs12508y@Cyanite and javascript! But on that pc, yeah. I'm hired as a frontend engineer, so I dont touch the backend unless I absolutely have to.
-
Cyanite84918y@yusijs Okay, I'm a self-tought programmer.. Soo.. 'Front-end' is just what you see, right? 'Back-end' is the functions?
-
yusijs12508yBackend is the server, frontend is the client (browser). So everything done on your end (displaying data, retrieving it, telling the server what to update etc) is done on client, aka frontend.
-
Cyanite84918y@yusijs OHHHHHH okay.. What about non-web? Lets say.. Building a (minimal) game engine(more like a framework), and then writing a game on top of it by ones-self?
-
@yusijs a few VMs / emulators to test things on various platforms/browsers, Chrome eating up lots of ram.
If you cost them ~$100 / hour and work 8 hours / day 225 days / year you will cost them $180.000 in a year. If you spend 15 minutes per day waiting for your computer or performing unnecessary actions like having to close down one VM/Emulator to launch another the wasted time would cost them $5625 in a year. (It is also likely that such an expensive computer can be used by someone else once you're done with it) -
I have 16gb of mem on work computer. I am also "just" editing text, but I also run 6-7 docker containers and 4-5 Java services.
I would take that 64gb in a heartbeat -
@Cyanite building a game is generally a teamwork. Their are people who specialize in designing skins and maps and then there are those who work in system level. But web games now thats a front-end developer task. Building a game engine or framework even a web one like phaser is different.

Cyanite84918y@KartikShetty I've never tried to work in a team. Never had to. I just do everything on my own, and turn to Stacks when I need help.
-
@Cyanite I am not saying it is necessarily a team game. You can go for it all alone, but that's just lot of work. Especially for lazy people like me.
-
Cyanite84918y@KartikShetty Not me. I prefer coding to gaming, or.. Anything else. I spend most of my working on my game. Even more so the past few days, now that I have a Patreon and I'm actually geting paid to work(be it only $9/mo atm). :P

I use 100gb for my /home partition and still got some GBs of free space. Download n destroy all the way :)

Writing text or not, give me all the RAMS! Mainly because I love making new VMs all the time to experiment, so it makes sense
Last I started my new job, and I got 2 new laptops (one from my job, amd a separate from the client, as I'll be there full time for at least a year). The work one was pricy af imo (P50, ~2500$ ex. VAT), then I got the client one... wtf is wrong with these people, the laptop cost fucking 6000$ (again, ex. VAT).
Now on the personal side I'm cheap as fuck, and the current laptop I use is one that was meant to be scrapped at my old job that I took home to fix. While it's fun getting those laptops, my brain cannot stop thinking "why the fuck do I need 64 gb ram, 2tb storage and 500gb NVME ssd to basically write text?"
