I rant and tell jokes and ask questions as well. (And casually promotes my game often ;3) -

You should give me your $0.02 on my most recent post, if you havent already. It's important to the future of my game. :3 -
@Cyanite : For a self-taught dev, the scale of your project is impressive. Kudos.

Uhhh... I've been programming seriously in it for about three years. Atleast two. Its the only full language I know. -
@Cyanite I'm no game dev, and sadly can't do much more than shout "Unity3D? Java? C#/Mono?"
I've written a small demo using PyGame once, and tried the Unity SDK a few times.
Game development is difficult stuff, brave are those who to venture in to it. -

Unity3D is an engine which i DO NOT WANT
Tbh most of my game will be a GUI. It'll be setup like a computer desktop. There will be some simplistic games like minesweaper and solitare. However most of the game will be focused around hacking, coding, modding, and system administration. -
@Cyanite What about using javascript, html 5, canvas, (animated) SVGs, WebGL? You could either host it, or package it as a standalone cross-platform app using ElectronJS.
Writing your own graphics engine is tough, but doable, especially for a simple UI and 2d sprites.
I dislike working in Java myself, but it's very well suited for the job. The "slowness" of Java is rarely a problem, especially if you aren't aiming to render millions of cubes like minecraft does.
Anything is possible in python as well by the way... Eve Online is written in Python, with their own custom engine.
C# is a great option as well, but for cross platform you'll need to keep Mono compatibility in mind.
The smoothest paths can be found in popular languages with rich ecosystems, e.g. Java, C++, C#, Python and js/web.
I'm tempted to work out one of my personal ideas for a tiny game in Rust (http://arewegameyet.com)... but with such a "hip young language" there's the risk of running into dead ends. -
trogus131638yThe X is an icon font centered in the circle, different resolutions can shift it off a dp/pt or two. I think I have another icon that is the full (x) I'll see how that behaves

1, you sound like my current designer. "USE HTML WITH A JS BACKEND!!!" (no hard feelings David~)
2, I ended up going with Java and i'm hosting on http://itch.io here is a screen shot from my latest update, Pre-Release 8:
