This must suck for all the kids with a chromebook for school. It's not that easy to change the browser for them. The amount of ads they'll be subjected to won't be healthy, especially for a child.
-
So glad that we have one singular company in charge of browsers, web standards, ads and search engines
Its so convenient™ -
kiki352942y@LotsOfCaffeine not web standards. Everything, but not web standards. Mozilla and Apple have a lot of authority.

To the surprise of nobody. What is google's main revenue again? Google Ads. 81 percent of their income.
-
@kiki is it like that? I'm not a web dev but every now and then I'll encounter a website that just won't work with firefox and demands to use chrome because of some chrome specific api which gives me the impression google is just forcing their custom APIs around

kiki352942y@LotsOfCaffeine it’s usually anything related to webrtc, e.g. video calls on the web. Use Firefox or Safari. Keep chrome on your computer just for those three websites out there

bruterik3012y@kiki I'm not a webdev either but isn't Mozilla funded mainly by Google?
And isn't Safari the new IE?
In other words: isn't the influence of Google on the web standards increasing? -
kiki352942y@bruterik Safari is the new IE in a sense that it’s very popular, general people (not devs) like it, and Apple doesn’t move an inch when google tries to push their crap.
Safari is a great browser. I do frontend my whole career, and I wanna say that if your website breaks in Safari, this means you used some disgusting hacks. I use Safari as a great tool that can measure code quality.
google is ending adblockers in jan 2023
