I usually don't worry about this, because I write all stuff from scratch. (Yes, it is exhausting.)

if you haven't plagiarised anything then it will pass, it is virtually impossible to accidentally write the exact words to a large enough degree, if you quote someone just cite it and no problems will be had

@matt-jd that's not actually true. There are only so many ways you can refer to certain things without it being incorrect. The tool will flag a lot of things, but it's the user's responsibility to tell if the flagged part amounts to something that should be citated.

Every school and/or country uses a different database anyway. So asking this internationally on devRant is pointless. I had to go to some local website, I already had an account with them created by the university automatically, I logged in and uploaded a PDF to get checked. I got the results soon after, It's idiot proof, or at least it was in our case.

That being said, I agree with @matt-jd, If you write your stuff properly from scratch as you should, there's nothing to be really worried about. You wont get any meaningful match rate in that way. My thesis was 99% unique, the < 1% accounts for the usual common phrases or similar paraphrases of common sources. You are very unlikely to go below 95% if you actually wrote it properly.

I'm also not sure, but I think direct quotes don't count towards it or are weighted, otherwise those rates would definitely be higher

@matt-jd i copied some paragraphs of someone's thesis because i can not explain it any better or shorter. Rest of it i wrote myself

@b2plane just cite it and show that the explaination is from someone else like using quotes or something and you are good. The software is going to see it and if the examiner cares they will see you have referenced it and quoted someone which is 100% fine you can't get in trouble for it

@electrineer I don't know what tools you have been exposed to but the ones that I've seen won't complain and typically give numbers like @Hazarth gave. Either way just proper source citation is enough to keep you out of trouble
