You don't necessarily need that specific knowledge to be a good programmer, you do however need the ability to quickly learn such things so you might as well use those logic gates to improve that ability.

Pointer32497yIf you're a good programmer, means that you have good logic, therefore, logic gates should not be a problem, maybe your problem is reading circuit diagrams and keeping up with the lines.

ecv802157yUnless you're gonna be doing lots of bitwise operations, then no... And even so you can always refer to a table and look it up the moment you need it, so it's kinda useless to learn that
