The whole time I've been in school they have been telling me I need an amazing portfolio, LinkedIn and GitHub. From what I keep seeing and can tell... is this all a lie?? What do I actually need to get hired?

"We want to hire someone fresh out of college but they need to of started working at the age of 14."

    @tristan63 14? You need 25 YOE at 14, 36 YEO at 20 and 57 YEO at 25.

And that's just for the internship with "possibility of junior position"

A LinkedIn profile doesn't hurt anyone besides your inbox, plus most hiring managers / recruiters will at-least look you up to quickly validate your CV.

A GitHub account with functional projects you have worked on shows what you have done and where you are at technically, don't just fork every thing and claim it as your own,
Also, no one really cares about PRs on other projects unless you have ALOT of them, but beyond that it's not essential. if you're being hired by a DEV and not HR they will look at it if you offer it up.

i had none of that, when i got hired.

None of that was necessary for the three jobs of my 14 years career. Also I have no LinkedIn or other social media profile. Curiosity and a weird skillset in a variety of fields got me the jobs.

You need interview experience, you just keep getting more interview experience until someone makes you an offer.

I got off LinkedIn because they were spewing woke racist shit against white people. If that filters out companies that are okay with that then it saves me time.

I guess it depends on the country.

Where I am, all you need is to say you have some degree in IT and want to work to feel like a hot girl in a night club.

After that if you want a job AND a good salary, you only need 5+ years of experience.

But yes, portfolio and linkedin are useless.

All you need is a good resume and know DSA properly.

an up to date LinkedIn profile will mean a lot to certain hiring managers. at the most simple level it’s a way of showing that you want to exist in the professional world and are in touch

every time someone applies for a position i’m hiring for, i look if they linked out to a GitHub repo and then look at LinkedIn

my favorite thing to do on an interview is ask about code from a shared GitHub repo. immediate connection with the developer bc they know you cared enough to look at their work and it’s an easy transition into their thought process to get a feel for their skill set

if you are trying to get hired and move into manager roles, i’d say having a LinkedIn profile is more important. if you want to stay a dev forever, probably not very important

@bebetter I‘m in a manager role without LinkedIn but I have a PhD in engineering.

@lastNick 👍🏻 LinkedIn is definitely not a requirement for a manager role. Doesn’t mean it doesn’t help though
