what on earth do games like starcraft II do that even on more modern hardware their 'game modes' take awhile to initialize ?

I guess, they pump massive amounds of model animation and texture data into the GPU, so it is already there when it needs to be rendered. Maybe that data even has to be decompressed and copied around before it can be send to the GPU.

As usual, doing it right costs time and therefore most publishers probably just force the devs to botch it and increase minimum required specs instead.

I don't remember load times to be an issue of StarCraft 2 though. I quit because of ladder anxiety.

@Oktokolo sad to read you quit because of the ladder anxiety. Take it from me, just play, have fun. It's a videogame, not a cancer cure treatment and don't worry about rankings or whatnot. Sure that other guy may be way above the ladder, but you probably have a larger paycheck and a loving companion, while the opponent is still a basement dweller.
