Have you heard about Schrodinger's backup?

A backup's sate is undetermined until a restoration is attempted.

I had that happen to me. Had a backup script that tarballed the entire root directory (apart from a few directories), with the --one-filesystem flag. Then I forgot that my /home directory was a mount to a different partition. Realized that only when I lost my ssh keys after the restore. Good thing I did older backups in a more stupid way, and they still had those keys.
