Numinex10867y@RicardoBrancas If you are, then you haven't understood the magnitude of this threat.
-
@Numinex maybe I haven't, I don't even get why it is a threat. So they know every single we do, every second of the day, what's the problem? They mostly don't care, unless you do something wrong, in which case they should know.
Maybe I don't get it because worrying about government surveillance is a very American thing...? -
Numinex10867y@RicardoBrancas To me, that in itself is a very bad problem. But the true threat lies in manipulation. The big companies with all this data like Google and Facebook. What if they decided that all Jews are bad. They could feed you with only negative content personalized just for you. It'd take like a Max of a month before you'd be hooked. And this can happen. There exists numerous papers on Facebook scientists experimenting on Facebook users for emotional research. They can track whether you're angry or happy or whatever. Which in turn they can use to see how well you've bought into their story of all Jews are bad for example. The possibilities are endless and all equally malicious. Please take some time to read into this. It's really important.

@Numinex I guess i hadn't though about it from the perspective of manipulation, thanks for the enlightenment!

lumy3577y@RicardoBrancas yeah you didn't understood the threat and the meaning data, they don't care what you're doings on Facebook, they care of where you are and with who you communicate (Metadata) that's the important shit. LQDN (french association) linked a pretty good article to that (in French sorry) but they've alot of videos in English on they're website about this subject. (https://tinyurl.com/ych6re6d) .
They are also some personal data that we should keep secret, imagine now they now your sexual orientation and the one of everyone, and let's say u get a guy like trump in your government, imagine what he could (if he had the data). If he was a little more crazy/conservative? (Godwin point!)
Private life doesn't matter on your friend, and data about you won't change the world, but big data about country may help way more.
I hope I make you understood the threats in place and I will end by saying that if you want the freedom to walk naked in your home, don't make it a public place :p -
@Numinex Am I wrong to believe that right now it's just companies (like Google, Amazon, Facebook) that currently engage in these kinds of manipulation with advertisements and search results?
Propositions I believe you made:
1) The government controls the companies enough to curate results and advertisements.
2) The government uses personal data to more strongly persuade individuals through further curation of results.
It seems that 2) assumes 1). Regardless of 2), I believe 1) would be enough cause for alarm. Anyone could spread a political ideology via the big tech companies without the need to gather lots of personal data.
Without reading a lot about the current state of affairs, I'm more interested in who manipulates results and by which motives than I am in how they use personal data to target such curation.
As far as I know:
Who : Google, Amazon, Facebook
Which motives: Profit
It's unjustified, but the profit motive scares me less than ideological motives would. -
Numinex10867y@thejohnhoffer That is very much true, but companies like Facebook who are owned by one person could very easily turn into a giant information monster. Since Mark Zuckerberg owned the company he could start moving towards him having absolute control over the company (if he doesn't) and using Facebook for promoting his own ideologies and interests.
-
@RicardoBrancas probably, because I'm sure as fuck not.
Still yet to entirely pull the pin and ghost it yet though... -
@Numinex what kind of subtlety in advertisements could they possibly use to infect you with the idea that jews are bad? It would have to be extremely subtle to the point of being subliminal. In which case is terrifying because then they're targeting your subconscious.
-
Numinex10867y@dalastTomCruise Alright perhaps I was a bit extreme but there are studies that show that if you expose people to certain kinds of information (without any counter-information)for like a month, they'll eventually believe it. And sure it's fucking scary.
-
@Numinex oh for sure. They cater to your likes so much that they incidentally filter out anything that you don't like; its like a bubble or a safe space (south park lol).

SSDD47977yAs I've said in another rant.
Google and Facebook can't even serve meaningful ads yet. How often do you see ads for something you bought the other day.
As for the government, no western government right now is fit to wipe their own arses. It takes them years to notice when someone hasn't paid tax correctly. People are frequently sent mail from the govt after they have died.
I understand the problem and the threat but the reality is we're decades and decades away from being sophisticated enough to do anything with it, other than retrospectively go back and look through someone's social media history - AFTER they've done something terrible.
