donuts236728y@iAmNaN why? I guess airline would be considered tech...
Or maybe it's not really IT vs tech but the type of IT..... -
iAmNaN68458y@billgates we have about 1000 tech folk, covering the entire spectrum. We have culture centers where we can hang, an onsite cafeteria with decent enough food, Starbucks coffee, collaborative seating, Wi-Fi everywhere, so if you don't want to work at your desk, you go find a quiet corner and go chill, and very flexible schedules, all with competitive pay. What's not to luv, doing what you like in a very relaxed environment.

donuts236728y@iAmNaN so really it's just the culture?
How much algo stuff do you need to know and how much time do you spend fixing things that really shouldn't be broken?
And no one constantly telling you to do this, no that... -
iAmNaN68458y@billgates yes, it's the culture. Algo depends on what sort of development is being done; we cover the spread. We have very robust change management system in place, which includes integration testing, acceptance testing, QA testing, peer reviews, code reviews, and documentation every step of the way. Very few bugs actually make into production. It's not 100%, but it's very good.

donuts236728y@iAmNaN wow that sounds like Heaven to me too and what I was thinking of when I think tech...

SSDD47608y@billgates biggest difference is legislation and policy versus creative thinking and doing what's right.
Bank: I have this great idea but I can't implement it because legislation and policy.
Tech: I have this great idea... let's put together an agile team and MVP it!!

Does anyone know what the **day-to-day** differences are between working in IT (banks, hedge funds) vs tech (Google, Facebook, Netflix).
In my mind, I see Hell and Heaven. And there's a giant wall in between called "technical interviews + algorithms and data structures".
I'm on the Hell side... And not sure if I should climb the wall 😔
Is the wall even that big?
