    Once had a "programming internship" that involved converting word docs to excel spreadsheets. Unpaid, 8 hours per day, 30min lunch, office you couldn't decorate, no windows, deadlines that required you to work nonstop. The only thing that separated it from slave labor was that I could and did quit.

    In my old job we gave the really cool R&D project to the group of interns (like 4 or 5 of them with a senior dev mentoring) most of the senior devs were jealous because the wanted it but didn't have time because of customer work.
