I find it depends on situation.

There are times where inline is better and times side by side is better

I think it depends on the diff.
Large diffs, side by side is king,
For one liners though, either can work.

I like the on demand inline diff view offered by JetBrains' IDEs in editor tabs when clicking on a change marker in the gutter. But yeah, when committing, resolving, picking or investigating, i obviously use the full side by side diff view instead.

It depends on the screen estate also. Bitbucket does shit at it on a 15inch FullHD
