I can't get a good dev's opinion in any other place other than here. So, are macs really overpriced?

They are and they aren't. My two cents: in a direct comparison of specs vs other laptops, they are usually 2x and 3x more expensive. But from experience, they far exceed the lifespan of other laptops both in structural and in battery. My Asus laptop feels too plastic and you visibly see the wear and tear of time on it. Plus I had to replace its battery 2 times in the last 3 years.

My early 2011 macbook pro on the other hand looks almost brand new after 5 years and with its original battery, it can still give me 5-6 hours of battery runtime.

So my Asus cost me so far €800 + €200 worth of batteries = €1000 for 3 years and it should soon be replaced vs my macbook which cost €1600 for 5 years of usage and still going!

The quality shows in the smallest of places. Apple has pride, something many other manufacturers lack. Compare the inside of an Air or Retina with any other laptop.

There's a Russian proverb that goes "I'm too poor to buy cheap stuff." I think it's quite fitting in this case.

☝🏻️what they said. I'm an apple lover mostly for the fact that they give me zero stress. You can't put a price on that but it works out the same lifespan wise

My old iMac, which my son uses is from 2007, runs The latest OS, still looks great and is still usable. How many computers from anyone else from 2007 are still in the wild? I am a designer so looking at a stylish piece of industrial design is also important.

yes. they are overpriced. and mostly the money isn't worth it (u could get same cheaper).
but to be honest: i started coding with windows and .net, had to move to mac then. and for devs its "better" compared to windows. of course there are many views on it. i like the unix part and the "easyness" on macs. but the rest, apples stuff, i don't give a damn.
and if you're working on a imac or macbook, take some eggs with you, these devices get so damn hot when working with it πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Besides the UI/UX considerations in a Mac that really make a big difference for me, since I've got it I've just wanted to use it more, you know? And I do all my development on it. All tools are easy to install on a Mac, with home brew or something similar, so if you want to learn about x, few commands and boom, you're in. That's the one for me. It's really easy to get the crap out of the way and do the stuff I want to do.

IMHO,the OS is crap compared to Linux. But Apple was mainly a hardware company, and some of their devices, even if they cost 4x plus the price are worth it. You can always resell a not so old macbook for a good price. I'd just install Fedora on it, like Linus Torvalds.
