Line numbers should be on by default on all editors for fucks sake. Why the hell it is the other way around??

    Agree! I always enable it as the first thing after a fresh install.

    Good question... Always the first thing I turn on. But I wonder if developers aren't the primary target of editors where lines are off by default. But that would be odd given the rest of their features.

    Line numbers and hidden characters. Gotta make sure people aren't using tabs!

    @danwkennedy I think you meant "aren't using spaces" ;)

    I turn them off.. Why would you need it if the status bar at the bottom shows you the line number you're on currently

    Syntax Error
    Expected ";" (semicolon) at line 33847
    me: Hmm... 1, 2, 3... Where the fuck is line 33847!?

    @batuhanfaik @xRahul In fairness, everything has a "Go to line" command but it just feels easier to see line numbers at the side rather than having to process it in a busy status bar.

    @samk so you telling me to press at least two keys to prompt go to line function then type gazillions of numbers and hit enter? no mate, i would rather scroll while rubbing my belly with my left hand :)

    @samk I'd just ctrl+G and type line number..
    Scrolling seems unwanted work

    @johnlimed plot twist: looks at the screen and sees bunch of spaces that separated the line (or fucks up the indent)

    @batuhanfaik No, no - not at all. I was just saying there is an alternative way to get a line number when they're not turned on. I have them on always, one of the reasons being the one you've given.

    You young folk with your wide screens. Back in my day we had 80 characters across, and that was all. We didn't have *room* for line numbers.

    And don't get me started on punch cards...
