Quick question since I'm trying to prove a point here, is a DDOS attack hacking?

Well in my opinion it is not. By definition hacking means breaching of security and extracting information. DDoS, in the other hand is more like a tool that overloads the server in order to shut down on its self.

@Vatkin hacking is by definition the sound that comes from a mechanical keyboard as the keys are typed. Hackers are the ones creating the sound.

DDoS is an attack. It can involve hacking, but doesn't have to (kind of). Prewritten attacks could be argued as either hacking or not because the attack was hacked into creation, but hacking isn't necessarily the attack itself.

Nothing is being hacked as such so i would say no.

what is the job title for the people whom do this attack? ?

@Ahed91 I'd say either penetration tester or information security analysis. cause even though a ddos doesn't break into a system itself they can be used to either find exploits or crash a part of the system to gain entry

    Nope. not hacking

hacking means infiltration. this is NOT infoltration.

Not hacking. But it can be used as a tool for hacking.

@Ahed91 Script kiddy, 99% of the time, since they're most likely using s prewritten script and changing the URL

I feel like the term "hacking" has a really bad reputation through the years since the start of technology. But have you guys really thought about what "hacking" actually is? okay let's take the different types of hackers we get, there is: blackhat, greyhat, whitehat and script kiddies. (personally I would put script kiddies with blackhat). what the blackhats are doing is what makes the term "hacking" have a bad reputation. what I'm focusing on is what the whitehats do.

whitehats are your typical engineers who have the ability to think outside the box. people like bill gates, mark zuckerberg, steve jobs etc. they thought of an idea and created that idea to make our lives better. isn't that what hacking should be about? bringing up ideas that other people haven't thought about?

this can fall under good and bad. I already mentioned the good, but for the bad side, hacking can mean finding an exploit in a security system and infiltrate it.

so to answer your question, no I dont think ddos is a form of hacking, its more like a penetration test.

@troopy712139 I blame Facebook for rewriting it's meaning.

@batuhanfaik You steal bandwith - and it is still illegal.

And the media... I am proud to be a hacker, but if I said that to anyone I know, they would call the cops.

@nblackburn I agree, because to me. I believe anyone can be a hacker, it doesn't even have to be computer related. it can be in art or music.

Thank you all for your that you've just proved my point to someone who insisted that every dev out there would say it is, looks like I was right since the overwhelming majority says it's not hacking
