    I think better analogy is comparing proprietary software to a clean shiny box but with few uses, while open source is a rusty box but with a million gadgets on it. It's consistency and (relative) stability vs utility and customizability.

    Well after 5+ years of open source development, I would say the picture is not that aggrevated. While there are mature and stable open source projects, there are literally tons of dead and partially built projects too. It depends on where you are looking at

    @coufefe That's true for closed source software as well though.

    Almost all of the freeware/shareware tools I've used on windows are eventually abandoned or overtaken by companies with shady motives.

    From Daemon Tools (bundleware) to Winamp (abandoned), from uTorrent (ads) to CCleaner (trojan/malware)... They all end up on the shitpile sooner or later.
