What was your longest commute, and was it worth it?

    50 minutes, and yes.

    I just moved offices so I am technically closer now at 40 minutes, but I was able to purchase a lot more house further from our offices and I make pretty good money... So I would say keep it reasonable. I have a friend that drives 1.5 hours each way and is only making 16 per hour, so that to me is nuts.

    @manFrame I currently commute about an hour each way, but I'm considering a job that's an hour and 45 minutes, but pays very well. I live in a route area, and like you, got more house for the money.

    it'd be about a 20% pay bump, but that commute... Lol

    @lreading single, married, kids?

    Single do it...

    Married, ask your wife

    Kids, don't. They grow up fast and missing an extra hour each day isn't worth it.

    That all being said if you are struggling financially, do what you have to, but don't do it for money if you don't need it. At the end of the day, missing out on your kids growing up isn't worth the extra stuff you can provide for them.

    @lreading something else to think of...

    Kids don't care about the merc in the driveway, they care about eating dinner together as a family and being tucked in bed at night.

    @manFrame live-in girlfriend, no kids. She currently commutes an hour and a half each way, lol. She's looking to take a big pay cut to work closer to home, so the extra income wouldn't hurt. The other factors are that the tech is good, it's a senior position which would be good for my career, and it's a 6 month contract to hire, so I could potentially walk away after 6 months if it isn't working out.

    If kids were involved, it wouldn't even be a question. I'm hoping that the idea of children doesn't come around for at least another 5 years, lol.

    @lreading I would say do it and get some good podcasts to listen to.

    I used to drive 60.000 km's a year, that was pretty harsh. Life has gotten easier now they've relocated me. It was well worth it though since back then I didn't have anyone waiting for me at home.
