Hey guys. I am pretty new here and also kind of young in real life (not finished with school yet).
I wanted to ask you guys, as what you are working and whether you like it or not, since I'll be graduating in a year and I'd really like some motivation on what to study/what profession to go after.

do that you want or you will do what not you really want. commercial software market is very boring. all these import export excels... so own startup is a thing. i failed at it because never did.

Can't give you advice but, Welcome to devRant!
Btw, there are a lot of teens here

@CozyPlanes Thank you. The community seems to be really amazing 😊
  • 2
@MaxDeepfield Ok, thank you for your advice 😊 But I'd be kind of afraid a having an own start up, because it's a lot of responsibility I guess..

@prenestor main problem with own company is that you will need to deal with people. money is easy to count. but people can do unexpected behavior
  • 1
@MaxDeepfield yeah. You're right.. And I guess I am not too great at dealing with people either πŸ˜‚ I am not persistent enough and too nice to really say my opinion

Hi and welcome to devRant! Well it depends of what you want to do :) I studied Computer Science because I wanted to be general about computation and software development without focusing too much on a particular tech stack. Because of this. I get to play around with different environments without getting lost. I really enjoy researching and experimenting with new software and looking at ways in which it can be applied to other technologies. If software engineering is what you want, and you like the theorical aspects of computation as well as branching out to other areas, then I suggest comp sci :) i am currently working at a local uni as a developer with it :)

    Welcome to this awesome place!

Mainly just do what you want yourself, that's about all advice I can give :).

I did the study Application Development which I finished this year after five years and now I work as s Linux support engineer at a hosting company.

In my free time I still program a lot and next to that I'm really into cyber security and privacy as you'll see after being on here for a little.

So yah, that's it really πŸ˜€

I studied computer science and hated it so much that I got a master's degree in it and now I work as a software engineer at a contracting firm. 😜

I like it cuz I like puzzles and math and all that kind of thing. You will be greatly served if you have access to the logical and creative parts of your brain. More so if you can combine them.

@AleCx04 that actually sounds very interesting. Thank you for taking your time to share your experiences with me 😊
And computer science could be something I'd like to study. I am more of a software person than a hardware person I think, even though both topics are appealing

@projektaquarius success through spite and hatred. I like your style bud.
  • 1
@linuxxx yes. I saw people talking about you being their "favourite cyber security nerd" or something πŸ˜‚πŸ˜Š
Thanks for your advice though 😊 it's just, that finding something I love enough to spend the rest of my life on is really freaking me out, because I am afraid of regretting my decision eventually.. πŸ˜₯

    @AleCx04 yup. That's just how I roll😎
  • 1
@projektaquarius haha, succeeding through hating something sounds like an interesting concept to me πŸ˜‚
Thank you for your advice 😊 I also love all that stuff, but I've only ever done it by myself. I am afraid of being "crushed" by the pressure of solving a problem till a particular deadline.. I tend to go a bit crazy then and get so nervous that I even stop sleeping in order to make everything perfect πŸ˜₯πŸ˜‚

@prenestor hey I regret it every day. But I also love it everyday. I think that is common to most everything though. The secret is to find something you love enough that, despite all the regret you may feel and all the frustration you feel, you still do it.

Look at it his way, I would probably be a pretty good accountant and probably be making more than I am now and probably have less frustration. But at the same time I would probably want to kill myself. My brain does not work in a way that I find accounting fun. My friend on the other hand loves it.

@prenestor Not sure about the cyber security one but yeah I'm at least the favourite privacy nerd of the currently biggest devRanter and probably of some other devRanters as well 😊. I know quite something about the subject and as you just upvoted, I'm working on a privacy site :). Feel free to ask me anything relating to privacy!

I get what you mean yes. All i can say is go to open days, look around, look at your current hobbies/passions :). Deciding on a study subject isn't for life by default, you are not bound by it!

@prenestor the pressure isn't so bad. And deadlines are the only way I ever get anything done.

@MonsieurMan thanks for the advice 😊 i don't mind you being lyrical at all 😜
Being happy really is the most important thing I guess.. 😊 but figuring out WHAT exactly I want is actually the hard part for me πŸ˜₯ i guess I'll also just have to try everything 😊

@linuxxx yep. Just needs the tinfoil hat to round out the look. 😜
  • 0
@projektaquarius At least put a penguin picture on it then :P 🐧
  • 1
@linuxxx yes, sorry 😊 English isn't my first language, so I sometimes mix up words or think that they have the same meaning when they don't..
And I think I'll start looking around for opprtunities to gather experience on the subject. It's quite hard right now, since I still got to get my driving license and "get older" in general, but in a year or so I'll do that 😊
And thanks for offering your help regarding privacy. I'll most probably will take advantage of that some day πŸ˜‰
  • 1
@projektaquarius that actually sounded quite philosophical πŸ˜‰ but I guess you're right 😊
I don't care too much about my future salary. It should just be enough so that I can survive without worrying too much 😊
Thanks for taking your time to answer

@prenestor I was told I would make a decent philosopher. I just wouldn't make enough as a philosopher to support the requisite drug habit.
  • 1
@prenestor That sounds good! And don't worry about taking 'advantage' of that offer haha. Reaearching/doing things related to/teaching people about online privacy is one of my biggest passions ;).

I'm wondering now, though, what's your age if I may ask?
  • 1
@linuxxx that's so cool 😊 helping and teaching other people really is something amazing and should be appreciated 😊
    I am currently 17 πŸ˜₯
  • 1
    @projektaquarius drug habit? πŸ˜‚
  • 0
@prenestor Yes it is, agreed much! That's alright haha, there are quite some younger ones on here I thought :). I'm not the oldest guy myself!
  • 1
@linuxxx really? 😱 i still feel so young πŸ˜‚ but I think that's mostly because I am still very inexperienced when it comes to programming/developing,.. and you all seem to know so much 😊
  • 1
@prenestor I'm only 22 years old myself ;). Although I've programmed for years, professionally I have nearly no experience. As for Linux, I've been linuxing (desktop + servers) since I was 15 so that's about 7 years now. Not saying I'm the best of the world with it but I definitely know some stuff about it.

We've got people from very experienced to very new to this world, I float somewhere in the middle I think :P

@prenestor there is a stereotype in US universities that philosophy majors are on drugs. Usually marijuana.

    @projektaquarius wow. Ok. I didn't know that.
