If I were to write a de/encoding algorithm, that nobody but me knows about, would it be safe?

    No. Never write your own encryption algorithms.

    To paraphrase someone, if the thing keeping your encryption unbroken is the fact that only you know how it's done, it's gonna get broken.

    Security by obscurity doesn't work.

    If you ask this question, you probably don't have the skill and knowledge to create something that is as good as what the experts in this field have created.

    We all have done this at some point to avoid complexity, but we all know that we're fucked if someone finds out.
