b3b343777yI can't use the official drivers because I'm on arch but there are open source drivers and I can play csgo actually pretty smooth (as long I'm using i3wm).
Arch package is called like xf86-video-amdgpu or something like that -
@b3b3 Yeah, the amdpgu is really good, but I would like to see a comparison with amdgpupro (the properitary one)
-
b3b343777y@Gatgeagent to install amdgpupro on arch I'd need to downgrade xorg server to 1.8 and no thanks my PC is working. But I know that the fps are not that different. The biggest problem with gaming on Linux is responsiveness. Most games feel incredible unsmooth even above 300fps but I found out that when using i3 it feels really great! When I had Ubuntu with amdgpupro I had max 10% more fps

Saw some article when I was googling this and basically from performance benchmarks AMD open source drivers are on par with the closed source ones, but the cards overall still don't perform as well as Nvidia (which has better performance on the proprietary drivers). But performance on the 970 and up was terrible overall. Can't remember the date of the post and it made no mentions of the 10 series so I assume the info is a bit outdated and things are better now.
I was actually saying the same as you with my colleague on Friday. "Driver performance shouldn't be an issue when you can just bruteforce performance with a 1080" -
Froot75567y@runfrodorun wouldn't be writing his own AMD graphics driver of they were so good I guess 😄

th3113397yI have Manjaro and a GTX 1060 and it works perfectly after install using the non-free drivers. Got to love the Manjaro hardware detection stuff.

@b3b3 Rocket League doesn't render properly. Graphics glitch even in the main menu.
-
b3b343777y@filthyranter hmmm never had any glitches 🤔 that sounds bad because the driver actually works fine for me.
-
@b3b3 Or what also happens using the open-source drivers is that it renders properly, but has like 0.2 frames per second.
-
b3b343777y@filthyranter holy shit! I think I'm going to buy Rocked League to see what's wrong there (wanted to play it anyways). A different option would be winblows. I've got win10 to play some games but I didn't start that for like 2 months now because Linux simply doesn't suck (that much) at gaming anymore. 0.2fps sound weird. I had that when my GPU was broken (other RX 480).
-
@b3b3 Yes, it works fine on Windows. Also literally anything else that uses 3D acceleration.

People talking about NVIDIA drivers on Linux and how bad those are. Pretty sure that if I had any recent GTX 1080 I'e be able to actually play Rocket League on any fucking Linux distro. AMD drivers are worse. How the fuck can I have my RX 480 work in 3D applications (read: Rocket League) on any other Linux distro than Ubuntu 16.04? The internet doesn't have a solution for me.
