*permission popup asking for contacts/telephone permissions*

*installs Open Camera*

Really, fucking phone/contact permissions to take pictures?!

Yeah fuck right off.

    in its defense, some cam apps use this to tag people in photos
    But don't know why it wants the phone permission

    @ThatDude Yup I love it!

    @ThatDude I don't know, I have the s8 camera app and it has for example much better focus.

    Just tried Open Camera on some of my figs. It's great! Thanks for pointing out this app :D. No more permissions for you Camera D8< You're permanently grounded

    Camera app: Trust me! I'm just a camera app! 👀

    Thanks to you I now have a new camera app. I just spend 10 going through all the options and oh my are there a lot of them.

    You know that you can just refuse to grant permissions, though? :D
  • 3
    @theCalcaholic It crashes on instant if I refuse them :/
  • 2
    @linuxxx Ah, damnit. Yeah that can happen if the devs don't respect your choices (or just did a bad job overall). :/

    @theCalcaholic @linuxxx android devs who let the app crash or block all services if you don't grant permissions that aren't absolutely required for the core functionality should kindly go fuck themself

    Some cameras scan QR codes automatically and there could be QR codes for contact info that the camera app will want to be able to parse and add into your contact list or maybe call.

    Permissions on Android are in a good place right now. You can pick and choose, apps tend to ask only when they need them, and most apps run without full permissions.

    When a camera app asks for phone access, it's a red flag. You used to have to dig around.

    I remember the days when it gave you info but you could do nothing, and you had to root your phone to control anything.

    @linuxxx Come to think of it, since you seems to take privacy very seriously and the subject is roughly around alternative app and privacy... I've been trying to take my privacy a bit more seriously since I got here (in a way, thanks to your rants and comments). I'm still trying to find a good alternative to google map, but so far, I didn't find enough serious comment about privacy on the alternative map services. And since I'm really good at getting lost... Any pointer(s)? Might as well take a compass and a paper map if I can't find what I'm looking for. That being said, I might just do that at the end .-.

    Damn I talk too much when I talk directly to someone ._.

    @Totchinuko For driving I use Navigator by mapfactor instead of Google maps (it works with Open Street Maps or you can buy maps from TomTom). I can't tell how well it works for walking though.

    Also, be aware that it can make a difference where you are living. If a map has good data for western Europe that doesn't necessarily apply to Asia for example.

    @theCalcaholic Hum I'll take a look at that. I live in Paris, it should be "common enough", and I'm too scared of planes to go very far ^^. Thanks!

    It needs phone permissions to check for certain APIs. Some permissions that belong to Phone should've been grouped into a System information category

    @linuxxx Check the source code then, it's open source anyway
  • 1
    @filthyranter His stock camera app is open source? That'd surprise me...
  • 1
    @theCalcaholic I was talking about Open Camera, which is in fact open-source...
  • 2
    @filthyranter Ah, but it wasn't open camera which required those permissions.

    @filthyranter Open Camera requires camera access. Seems quite fair to me!

    @linuxxx How dares it!! 😱

    @Totchinuko OpenStreetMaps (.org) is a good one! In some linux distro's there's an app called maps which literally integrates with OSM (OpenStreetMaps) directly and actually works better and faster for me than google maps!

    @linuxxx Thanks 😊 Very useful since I just finished to install Mint on all my computers.
