Soo I finished my apperenticeship a year ago and I do not have any higher degree what so ever.
"I am contacting you for a senior position at [...]"1 -
I decided to start learning go yesterday.
I had a Fun little automation task at hand and got to work...
The next time I checked the clock it was monday 02:40 AM
Getting up at 06:10 was hard...2 -
Tltr: Apperenticeship -> Job -> Promotion -> They pay for my bachelor
So I started my apperenticeship back in July 2014...
After a year of basic training I worked in different teams accros the company.
I finished my apperenticeship june 2018. Two teams offered me permanent positions early in 2018.
The team I decided to join, had a (back theb new) boss and I felt like she would be cool to work with. (I don't know how to describe this more accuratly... I just liked her visions, plans and what she told me about the work).
Fast forward half a year
I was preparing for the meeting where we would discuss my goals.
(I was preparing to ask for raise...)
Then she goes:
- "Hey NeedToRoll, can I have 10 minutes of your time, its serious!"
* "Sure"
- "Do you habe any Idea why I would wonna talk to you"
* "No" Thinking: What did I fuck up that badly
- "I would Like to thank you for your amazing work, and HR agreed to a 10% raise as per next month."
* "Thanks!"
Fast forward to now:
1. I will reducing to a 50% position (per my request)
2. They are paying for my bachelor s degree I am going to get. (Studying part time)3 -
Hey guys / and girls I've been of the grid as faar as social media is concerned for quiet some time... I assume the IT-world ist still as fucked up as it was when i left?
What happend? (Other than jase creating and deleting N-numbers of Accounts)
Also ist @linuxxx still alive? I just got a certificate error accessing https://linu.xxx
I missed you, devranters... Bring me up to speed14 -
Is it just me or is there a serious problem with devRant not loading more rants once you reach the bottom2
-
Today I had a meeting...
It was about a Team having problems with our Tool...
All participants where QA professionals...
(at the very least according to their Job title)
The invite said please come prepared!
THEY WHERE NOT ABLE TO DESCRIBE ONE ISSUE ACURRATE ENOUGH TO MAKE IT REPRODUCABLE4 -
Aber method that was supposed to Check If a payment for a (back then) unimplemented payment methode that returns true as a default value...
A Javascript oneliner to skip the payment... Used to be in produktion for years, before I reported it -
Hi guys its needtoroll
I was gone for a few months but now I am back and ready for more.
However I dont have anything to rant about I have an awesome new boss and a challanging project in an interessting stack.5 -
Just worked 12 hrs straight because the guy who earns more than twice my sallary (and ist currently on holiday in some fucking greek Island) ist to stupid to shit!!!!
This is unfair! You can not pay me very little because I am young and then give me all the responsibilities!!2 -
I had Highway to hell ringing in my ears while I‘ve read an article about Facebook planning to offer their customers a way to connect their bank account to Facebook...
Seems accurate2 -
Who thought it would be a good idea to limit the length of a dns record to 255 chars?
Is one really not allowed to use a proper dkim key in 2018!
The funny thing was that they just cut off the rest without informing the user!
Had to convince the guy to switch dns „provider“9 -
„Please do not ask any questions in the meeting next monday, I don’t want to be embarrassed!“
- The senior giving me and two colleagues an introduction into his field of work...
WTF1 -
Do you guys know the feeling when your opening PR on side project late at night..
The CI takes forever to make all the analyses and checks and you almost fall asleep because your so fucking tired? -
After 4 years off apprenticeship and 10 days of totally focused work I just turned in my final exam! (45 Minutes ago)
The final exam for IT professionals (here in Switzerland) is a project that you work on for ten days at your workplace.
I thought I would feel relieved in any way.
But honestly, there are only two things in my head right now:
Tiredness
And
The constant thought off what could be wrong
I AM TOO TIRED FOR EVERYTHING!
The only thing that keeps me alive for now is the music shaking my ears2 -
Not dev but worth ranting.
It’s important to know that I am a wheelchair driver.
It was Saturday evening and I was waiting for my friends.
All of the sudden a random woman approached me. Putted her hand on my shoulder and says:
In your next life you will be Running around!
Jesus holds his promises!
I was to confused to say anything... do you guys have a good idea on how to react?
I have to deal with similar stuff quiet often!
ITS STARTING TO PISS ME OFF!
WHAT THE FUCK GIVES EVERYONE THE RIGHT TO TELL ME STUFF LIKE THAT WITHOUT KNOWING JACKSHIT ABOUT MY LIFE?
I don’t think I need nor deserve their pity!8 -
Not really a hack but still worth telling:
I was working in the QA team for a big project. I tried to do some automation when I realized some radio button behaved weird... out of curiosity I checked the source and saw that there was a hidden option for a unimplemented payment option.
I was like: Let’s see how the system behaves if I just submit that form with that hidden value...
Well I was very surprised when I received the email that my order has been processed successfully.
During the investigation we found out that this bug was in prod for over two years. And it requires a one liner executed in the browsers console to skip the payment.
It was kind of a big deal and although I was (and am) still a trainee (in apprenticeship) I got invited to meet up with the client and the bosses.
It was kind of a door opener! After that they trusted me more. I have more responsibility, more interesting tasks and more client contact ever since.
To make a long story short:
Validate everything on the server side ;-)1 -
I would (at apprenticeship level) start to teach more software architecture and security related stuff.
Yes knowing how to iterate over an array is important but it’s getting lame...
And last but not least it’s fucking 2018 why am I writing a Java 6 swing GUI on paper as a test8 -
Although it’s not really a project I will be done with my apprenticeship in july this year and I already have a nice job offer... this feels like a success
-
Just have just installed VMWare Player for a school project but had to uninstall it because our teacher was unable to put the right version on our share.
Now my Notebooks keybord driver is that broken that a simple reinstall over the device Manager couldn’t fix it!
FUCK3 -
I am on my way home from an 8.5 hour non-stop call with one of our software suppliers...
How to you guys handle situations like that?
Consentrating became very difficult at the end to be honest.
And if it my teammates would not have been there (they gave me food, sth to drink and filled my coffee cup) I would have snapt after 4 hours...
The only thing I feel capable of doing for now is to listen to extremly loud music9 -
In june 2018 I am going to get my software developer diploma! I am very excited about it. But for now the workload is just getting higher and higher.
Therefore I think I am going to be less active on here for a while.
But before that I would like to introduce you to a new app two colleagues and I wrote to help students in similar situations.
https://beta.outcobra.school
It is a Website that allows you to manage all your study / school related stuff in one place.
It would be great if some of you guys would give it a try.
We appreciate all your feedback!
But it's a side project and still in beta... so please do not expect it to be perfect (yet, we are trying to get there...)
PS It's completely open source just search for outcobra on github. Feel free to open up as many issues as you like2 -
Not a dev but definitely a rant!
I hope there is a very special place in hell for people who use the toilets and parking spots reserved for disabled people!
Using it is not problem but if you make up stupid excuses and treat me like an idiot it makes me wanna punch you in you stupid ass liking face.
Here are some of the stupidest excuses I've heard:
1. I couldn't see the huge wheelchair on that parking spot because it is too dark (And I own the only light absorbing car)
2. I do not park here, I am just stopping (Yeah that's alright, you can't be in my way then)
3. I had to use this toilet the mirror is bigger and I had to fix my makeup
If I hear things like that I feel the NeedToRollThemOver11 -
My headphones just died because the battery is empty!
Not a good start!
I forgot the cable at home!
Bye bye peace, productivity, and focus6 -
Fuck I am to stupid to set up an ubuntu.
I just installed ubuntu as a dual boot on my notebook.
But now I can't boot it.
I mean I can boot it but only if I go to recovery mode first.
Any Idea what I could do?3 -
Not an actual teacher but definitely the guy who thought me the most: @java9
@java9 is a friend of mine who started the apprenticeship with me, but had serval years more of experience than I did.
At first he helped me get through the first complex tasks.
Luckily we are in the same class at professional school, and he helped me studying a lot.
Because of him I was able to develop my skills rather quickly.
Over the years our relationship developed into a close friendship.
Now we are working together as a team on more than side project and I've learned to love his perfectionism when it comes to code.
It's a pleasure to work with you @java9
Thanks for reading fellow ranter, here is a picture of us sharing a beer as a bonus2
