My mind isn't silent enough for meditation, so I read books instead. I find it much better than meditating :)

@Michelle I think is the opposite. My mind is not silent enough, so I need to take meditation. I start 5 seconds meditation and extend the time bit by bit. Also we can do medication anywhere. Sitting, lie on the bed, etc. The importance is to form a habit rather forcing it. That is how our brain designed.

@NoMad I start to do it very short like 5 seconds. It is the amount of time without thinking. I extend the time bit by bit. Also it is OK to have thoughts when you meditate, just bring back your focus back to your breath.

I use the app headspace quite often in the morning. Would recommend. Takes 10 minutes and really helps me to relax.

    My humble 2 cents.

Meditation is not about clearing your thoughts nor telling it to shut up nor controlling your mind to be on one thing. It is just monitoring and acknowledging what's on your mind at present. So even if you have million thoughts happening, that doesn't mean you cannot meditate.

Focusing on breath is just easier for majority and simplest method. Main concept is to be aware of what your mind is at. Breathing method is suggested because people usually have all kinds of craps going in their mind so it will be harder for them to focus on all that at a beginning stage. Hence started with focusing on breath. But if you can focus on your thought, no problem.

Be mindful. Be aware. And if your thought is bad and negative, try to look at it like watching a film, don't get emotional. You don't need to try and stop that bad thought. Just don't follow along that bad thought rabbit hole. Just guide it very softly.
