Best case, you get it anyway.
Common case is you'll get negotiated down towards your actually happy value.
Worst case, they deny you the raise. -

If they can't afford it, they'll simply refuse.
There's no harm in simply asking - if they fire you, they weren't worth your time and effort in the first place. -

Holy shit guys, thanks for the advice. I got the raise!!!!!! :D I asked for more than I had originally hoped for and they didn't think twice. Feels great.

I was called in to a meeting this afternoon, and for some strange reason, my boss had all our salaries written on a board, and I guess she had forgot to erase them before I got in. I've been thinking about asking for a raise for a few months now, but after seeing that list, I'm wondering if I should ask for more than I had previously contemplated. Would that be considered unethical?
