SkillsWebdev stuff (PHP, stylesheets, markup, you know the drill). Interested in learning Python, C and Java. Also, I hate JavaScript, but who doesn't right?

@bittersweet using less JS is just the best thing devs could do now. I see so many websites and apps that would actually be better without a crapload of JavaScript.
-
I've always wanted to know how you get terminals like that. Is it some kind of theme?
-
@ODXT you touched on a relevant point: I'm working on a rather big project for college and I'm basically doing it by myself, since my "team" doesn't seem to be interested in studying. They won't get good grades, but I don't get any help either. So lately it's like I have to learn everything in a very short time :/
-
@baeovvulf I love the thrill of finding out, of understanding. But what kills me is the feeling I don't know enough (and the industry always demands more and more)
-
@Clear0Ff @Codex404 you should definitely check it out at https://bulma.io. Small learning curve, recently updated (v. 0.7.0) and allows you to use CSS itself for most things. It only requires you to write your own js sometimes, but nothing too complicated if you're not familiar with it.
-
To be honest I don't like bootstrap much, mostly because I prefer to stay away from js and write only the minimal necessary for specific tasks. My framework of choice is Bulma, which besides being pretty and easy to use, is based in flexbox and comes with no js, so it's perfect for me.
-
I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion, but I actually prefer GitLab, I think it's better than GitHub in some aspects.
-
Not the same thing, but coding in a cold room for extended periods makes my fingers numb and stiff for a while afterwards.
-
As an absolute noob in Java... What did go wrong there? I sometimes see this on the Reddit app and it makes me curious.
-
Besides working with development and programming, I'm also a teacher. One thing I've learned is that it's often wise to pay attention to those who are still learning. It might surprise you to realize you can learn from those "below" you, have fun with them or simply offer some help. Everyone had to study to get somewhere.

@danderson00 that's exactly what happens here. I'm on a 2Mbps connection and the difference between Windows and Linux is just night and day: Download speeds on Windows are often abismal, not only due to updates but also because of other processes, like telemetry, which is almost impossible to turn off. On Ubuntu download speeds are over five times greater and stable. I try to only use Windows for gaming now.

Twitter was one of the first ones to try to come out as good guys by changing their policies and trumpeting it everywhere. Imagine if the Zuckerberg scandal had never happened...
-
Either devs and companies kill IE and stop supporting it, or Microsoft does. It will probably be the latter.
-
When I was like 9 or so, I thought that was how you converted files, by changing their extensions...
-
Painfully accurate.
-
@potata same here, I still don't have a clear idea about what I want to do beyond web dev. However I'm really interested in AI, machine learning and so on, which points me to python. But I also want $$ soon, so I thought about Java... Yeah, I'm confused.
-
@zvyn I'm curious now, isn't Java supposed to be this very popular language with more job openings and running in billions of devices? Also, thanks for the recommendations! Python is already on my list :)
-
@nicoco007 I feel you. I've lost count of how many times I typed "ls" or "clear" on a cmd prompt only to be confused for a few seconds.
-
@curlyDev I've always been a proponent of updating. What irritates me is how Microsoft chose to implement it. Options to limit the speed or how much bandwidth Windows uses are basically hidden. My connection isn't good and there are times I simply want to prioritize other processes instead of updates. Not to mention the telemetry processes sending data all the time which are nearly impossible to shut down or stop. Microsoft decided that their own interests are above what users want, and I don't like that.
-
@dmonkey I'd have to visit a therapist after that...
-
I've had professors insist we should write code with pen and paper for tests. They used it as a tool to... build character? I don't know. Apparently, since they did it 30 years ago and it worked for them, it will also work for us.
As The Police once said on a song: I don't subscribe to this point of view. -
@Lasagna yeah, turns out Windows is the hardest one to set up. How about Linux/Ubuntu?
-
JavaScript isn't difficult.
It's just terrible. -
@Lasagna I know it's a basic question, but what's the best way to set up a C compiler on Windows? This is all new to me and I'm pretty lost :/
-
I've been using Atom for a long time now, definitely my favorite editor. There's always a package for everything... Well, almost everything. But it's great to add only what you need.
-
@Jilano using the Linux shell on Windows, that's... amazing! I'm testing it today. I might have heard about this but I'm not sure. Anyway, can't wait to go back home and try it.
(don't worry cmd, I haven't forsaken you) -
@Jilano now I'm curious, what do you mean by the Linux side of Windows?
-
@Microsoft thanks! I've been using Windows for a looong time, but I feel welcomed anyway :)
-
@mohammed it was my second thought after looking for something in the settings (not an option anymore). But it turns out the OS will simply reset the services to manual-running, no matter what ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ .
-
@mohammed hey thanks! Also, Windows will let me pause the updates for up to 35 days, but that's no good since it'll only have even more stuff to download after that. I opted to limit the bandwidth in BITS and it worked :)
