Probably need more context
Typically this discussion comes up when they try to say we can use jQuery or ASP.NET web forms for new projects that I'm brought in for. When I'm trying to push angular or newer .Net stuff. -
I'm gonna go with a large corporation. Get out as a junior. Find a smallish company (<15 people in IT).
When you look for a new job, talk with the senior you will be working with and see if you can learn from them. If the company can't pin someone down, see how open they are with you asking questions on the job. -
.

@irene Correct, they can only tell you when you broke something. So if the application is only gonna sit on a shelf and go away. Who cares?
-
If you want to have unit tests on each level, yeah do that. Its unwieldy woth new codebases but better in the long run.
That is if there is a long run for that codebase. -
Why do they do this? What is the benefit to their ad revenue software?
-
Why does it have to be this way? Where you find another position for managers to consider promotions and pay raises.
-
They are incentivized to make features. They are not incentivized to make good code.
This idea doesn't just exist in banking. I've found it in every industry and technical debt always comes due. -
Do not compromise application security because someone said so.
-
If only more people did that.
-
This is interesting. Ive done that and seen people try to get around me.
-
I'd argue to drop them as a potential client.
-
I'm so sorry.
-
You could a donate link and put it at the bottom of your page.
If people like using your app, they'll find it. -
Congratulations.
If your working with fixing computers, you'll realize how little people know about computers. -
Oh you mean command line scripts?
-
IEEE's Software Engineering Radio covers a variety of topics. New technologies, design considerations, how to respond to major crashes, etc.
I also listen to Programming Throwdown. It's two programmers talking about stuff. -
Nice.
-
Results: Me and the project team got pulled into a meeting to discuss the problem. Turns out the project manager didn't send an email before hand to notify business people about it and the project is delayed.
Which looks bad on me. 🙄 -
That seems counterproductive.
-
Thats stack overflow for you.
Unless your asking a coding problem with code snippets that are comment completely, links to what you have researched, 5 point essay to why your question is different, character development, and a dramatic twist.
You'll get downvoted. -
Well, you gotta start teaching them early I guess. Might as well teach antiquated technology. That way they'll appreciate the modern niceties we have.
-
Man, that sucks. Were you able to recover anything?
-
Wasn't it Aristotle who suggested that the more you learn, the more you realize that there is more to learn. Or something like that.
This is the reason for specialization. Find something you enjoy doing in programming then become an expert in the concepts. So, when new technologies come along, you just have to learn how to implement those concepts.
If you and you colleagues are all specialized in different thing. Then you can rely on them the help with your deficiencies. You can't be an expert in all things.
