Lol or it could just stop at the first "about one week" with a "wait one WEEK???"

I’m actually happy when I get a change requested on my PR and it’s just "remove comment here" because 1/ there won’t be comments everywhere and 2/ fuck yeh I produced good code that didn’t get anything else needed for change (I mean of course everything can always be optimised but youknowhattahmean) so I -do- get better yayyy
-
I also love iOS <3

@Root god I actually hate everything about "networking" and damn blog posts. It always seems so fake and just a huge circlejerk (the irony)
Also, OP, if you would’ve said "yay! Go get it my dude!" if the person was a guy, then yeah saying "you go girl" is fine to me. Please just no "yasss queeen" cause I would audibly cringe and grunt at you. -
@WeAreMany You get a "yes" in any startup you interview for… I’ve pretty much been hired at my own job just cause I’m a woman, and how do you think that feels? I always feel inadequate. It probably seems really whiny I guess, like yeah I got a job boo fckin whoo, but if it’s to be a diversity hire, it fucking sucks. Like, I hope sometimes to have the skill in order to be hired for my capacities and not to meet some damn quota, fantasy or to further an agenda. I always doubt myself and I wish I could just be a dude doing his thing, instead, (even if it’s most likely not needed especially where I work, and I’m aware I’ve got my own self esteem issues here) I always feel like I have to prove myself. Like I’m just bringing the team down and I don’t deserve to be there, but I am because I’m a woman, and some bloke who’s probably more talented or smarter than me could’ve had the job instead. I dunno. I wish it wasn’t like that.

Triggered.

@electrineer Can I have some? :3
I thought my 3 year old was being a brat tonight, thanks guys for putting things in perspective, imma go apologies to him rn -
"Look at me!"
Unfortunately, society kinda expects this from us. If you’re not proud of what you’re doing, then it means "it’s probably not that good.".
Gender wise...
For women, I feel like it pushes so much a mindset of "Yassss queen talk about programming I’m sure you rock at it ~ gurls can do anythiiin" (which in itself just reinforces the fact that it’s apparently "abnormal" for a woman to code, but I digress)
For men, I dunno. I’m not one. Dunno what the expectations are for you. If I were to assume, I’d say that guys and girls both do the "I just learned a new thing so now I’m an expert". It’s just that when a woman does it, it’s seen as her taking pride in the fact that she chose a path that makes her a minority in her field. And people like the idea of being oppressed when they are not... so yeah. But when a guy does it, he’s just "annoying".
They’re all annoying. People are annoying. I’m annoying too. I’m pretty sure my post is unrelated anyways. -
Tbh, I rage a bit. Then when I realise I’m actually -angry- at something I work on, means I need to take a break.
I take a lot of walks when I need to make anything compatible with fucking piece of SHIT Safari.
Whoops, time for a walk I guess- -
Well, time for junior to look around for a new job. Where he’s respected as a human being.
I’m happy to be in a team where if leads mess up, they admit it and deal with the consequences themselves.
In exchange, I’m more than 100% happy to help them out with it. If you treat people with respect they’ll go great length to help you out, and everyone will be happier with this. -
Sure, but that’s the same with a secretary, a manager, a designer. Designers have portfolios, but that could be bullshit for all we know. Do designers also get asked to do design jobs BEFORE being hired? Do managers get asked to prepare a weekly schedule for free?
I think you get more info on what kind of dev a dev is by talking to them rather than just throwing a test at them being all like ok good luck!
CVs weed out the "on paper" profile you seek.
And as for self taught devs, well, that’s also what motivation letters are for. I would be way more likely to hire a self taught dev who tells me what’s up, links to his website / GitHub, than someone who just "please see my CV attached, kr" even if they got a masters.
But if you’re a good interviewer, you don’t need tests.
And re: your junior, if after multiple reviews he doesn’t progress, then get rid of him. In other fields that’s also how it’s done. "It’s not working out" is a valid thing to say as an employer. -

I’m still not sure why devs are the only ones who have to work before even being considered to be hired.
Pretty sure a vet doesn’t have to castrate a cat for free in order to get a chance at an interview.
Before I was a dev, I applied to a hairdressing salon to be a receptionist. They asked me to work a whole day for free, with no contract, to see if I would be a good fit.
I was advised to sue them by my union because that’s illegal.
I agree that it’s nice not to hire a dumbfuck. But that’s the same in every field. That’s why we have resumes and more importantly, recommendations.
I get interviews, discussions, of course. But online tests? Some people lose their composure on anything that resembles a test, for no reason. And that’s fine. But they can be very good workers. It’s silly to judge them on something designed to raise your anxiety levels. -
When you have a child I guess your schedule and habits sort of "happen".
I wake up, go pick up some fresh bread from the bakery
Get home, prepare son’s sandwich, get him dressed, dad brings him to school.
It’s now about 8h20 by the time they’re both gone. I workout until about 9h40. I shower, pour myself some coffee, scramble some pudding and oats real quick.
Then at 10 I start working and I work until 18:00, when my son gets back home from school.
Then I chill with my son/workout some more/watch YouTube depending on what my son wants to do, while dad cooks. If he doesn’t want to, I cook instead.
Then we eat, then kid goes to bed (19:30-20:00) and then I play video games until midnight, I go to sleep, and repeat 5x a week.
I like my routine. I feel safe in it, like I have a bit of time to react if something out of the ordinary happens.
When I need a break from code I throw in a load of laundry, make some tea, or empty the dishwasher. I clean during the weekend.
So yeah! -
@N00bPancakes tbh this still sounds like an answer I’d give tho

People who don’t bother learning the tools they use everyday (like... a computer) and rely every single time on someone else to help them with it instead of just allocating a tiny percentage of their temporal lobe to LEARN.

I mean, we said goals, not wishes.

That’s some pro NLP shit right there. Using positive words instead of negative ones. Similar to how "don’t forget to" will have less success than "Remember to". Our minds are more akin to ignore negation so it’s actually quite nice that you guys say that.

@thekaleidoscope unfortunately unavailable for the EU :( but thanks!

I don’t even get ideas. I sometimes feel like a mindless drone executing orders. If I had ideas as great as yours that got me excited, it would be neat because I’m sure you’ve learnt a lot, with being so passionate about it :)

I wish I could see a list of what I’m subscribed to on my gmail account and then uncheck everything I didn’t want anymore :(. But that would be too easy of course. I always feel bad for a few seconds when I see my mailbox and the silly environmental impact my thousands of mails sitting there must have. I do move on quite quickly though, not going to be an hypocrite.
Somehow, I do remember a website that did just that, offering to send a very formal email asking the company to delete all your info. I can’t remember the name though. -
By telling myself that panicking will not make the situation less stressful.
Unless the situation is you being chased by a wild animal that can kill you, in which case I’ll take the adrenaline.
But in a work situation, if I’m already doing my best, I keep it up. If I’m slacking and can make a change, I do it. But It’s something I’ve had to learn with time. -
First time I saw "kind regards" abbreviated as "kr" in an email, all I could think about was the person laughing like krkrkrkrkrkr

I’m on my first holiday this year (and my last), for two more days. I actually can’t wait to get back to work. I will still enjoy these last two days to sleep a lot though, because it’s the only thing I actually feel like doing. Because fuck seasonal blues hitting me like a truck right now, sucking all the enjoyment I could have doing ANYTHING right now. :(
