@Lexter I'm trying to do that, but they refuse.
-
@Lexter unfortunately, I have to work in a heavily customizable CMS. I would love to take things away from the editorial team, but noooooo. They want to be able to put shit where they want it then blame us when they use a thing for something it wasn't designed for. Even though it was designed based on their ask and their reqs.
-
@sariel you win this round.
-
I suggested we do real agile/sprint planning with grooming and such. One big meeting at the end of the week to do it all.
It was perverted into meetings all week of the second week of the week. And our PM doesn't do the prior required work so we have to do all of that work in the meetings. I tried to add real process to end our nightmare and I just added to the nightmare. -
Ooooh. Wonder if I can implement that on my current project. The editors already fuck it all up then complain that tools aren't working.
-
Anal or painal?
-
@hjk101 cowtow and browbeat are fun though. This job has gotten super irritating.
-
@darkwind that's assuming unit testing is funded and invested in and covered and maintained.
-
@magicMirror exactly. We have grooming meetings where we're supposed to be all of this. But our PM really likes throwing new shit out there right at planning and talking us to death about it. Then doesn't know what the fuck she is talking about and keeps us sitting there for a million years because she runs the meeting too.
-
I am second hand angry for you. Holy shit. This sucks.
-
@sariel I have been put in charge of a couple things on this project that involve working with other groups that already make me feel like this. Hell 90% of the product meetings make me feel like this. At least if I was a director I would get a jump in pay.
-
@100110111 while normally I would agree, my company buys out the competition and is the leader of its niche. And they keep using the global giants as their examples and consider them competition.
-
Come be a manager at my old job please. Ugh.
-
My boss must be a project manager.
-
@mundo03 strong possibility. IE11 is terrible.
-
@scor I don't think so? Like we're an if not the industry leader in our niche. My big problem is that this company fails to realize that companies with broader appeal can also serve out our niche. And unfortunately, our finance people seem to think that as well and make a lot of moronic decisions.
-
Yeah I'm def in a Kondo PM project. Little to no documentation, emphasis on do it fast rather than do it well, little code refactoring until something dies, testing is a black box and fairly questionable.
-
First thing I do is understand why so many ID murder show murders happen.
Second thing, consider becoming an ID murder show murderer. -
@shivayl I wish. I left government behind for the commercial world hoping to not have to do this shit any more.
-
I am offended. PHP is the devil's work and in this house something something religion pun. I just hate PHP.
-
@magicMirror I don't think they are, but knowing finance they might one day.
-
Oh and I, and most of the other engineers, brought all of this up several times in several meetings. Management doesn't listen.
-
Also I got screwed so I sat at a level 2 for 5.5 years.
-
It depends. Some companies figure education into it. Sometimes it's a minimum to be considered. Sometimes it's to reflect ability. My last job, senior was level 3 of 8 and most topped out at 4.
-
I used to think I understood function scope. Then I started doing javascript. Although sometimes I wonder if I do understand it and this project just sucks.
-
@junon like everything else in life, I feel like these are guidelines rather than rules. I personally have had to force myself to violate DRY for readability, testability, and debugging.
-
Personally, though I am not an Android dev, I would go with Java, if not for Android then because Java is still inexplicably popular (I fucking hate it, but story for a different time) and because a lot of things still compile to Java byte code and use the jvm. I think Android studio is (was?) based on IntelliJ so you get that too.
To address the senior hate, I feel like that's just a job title thing. Technically I'm a senior developer, based on work experience, education, etc, but depending on who you ask I am a different thing. Right now I am a software engineer 2. Not happy about it, but it is what is. -
@zemaitis I mean, round about solution, you save a back up, delete it, push the deletion, add it to .gitignore, push that, then put the workspace.xml back where it belongs. Share the right workspace.xml on intranet.

Can I recommend Candy Crush?
-
@sleek I would like 7/10 work for @Root
