First time back to work today after a month long break. It was soul crushing. I don’t know if I’m permanently burnt out or just seriously disenfranchised with the corporate world but I would have thought after a holiday I would be energised and ready to go. It turns out after coming back to work I feel exactly the fucking same! Tired, exhausted, discontent, irritable and most importantly BORED. I am bored spending 8+ hours a day at a computer chair responding to emails and teams messages! Has anyone felt like this before? Did you ever overcome it? I’m worried as I’m getting older I’m losing my love more and more for programming whilst simultaneously hating the concept of work more and more.

it's normal. i've been a dev for nearly 10 years now and that feeling just never went away. we aren't designed to live like this and no amount of breaks or coping mechanisms will ever make it any less miserable. all you can do is submit to it and stop looking for a solution, that somehow helps in a sick sort of way.

Any chance that it's your current position/employer that's making things this bad? I think plenty of people feel like this, but in my case finding a way to change things up helps ward it off a bit.

I've not been fortunate enough to be in a position where I can choose to leave or look around for something at my leisure, I've always moved jobs out of necessity. In doing so I've ended up having to dive into the deep end and it keeps things fresh, even if it does bring along its own form of stress and tiredness.

I'm thinking of starting a Mead making business. Get an alcohol license and become a vendor at my local breweries. 🤣
