Is a masters degree in IT worth it? I mean I've just started my masters in Software Engineering after my Computer Science bachelor's and I expected to learn something useful from it. So far they have taught only bullshit and stuff that I haven't found useful since I've started my IT career 3 years ago (now I am the team lead at a small startup, and I consider myself a really good developer). To summarize, is a masters diploma useful? Will it help me with anything, give that I've started working as a developer (freelancer, didn't know much back then) when I was still in high school (CV bragging rights)?

    Work experience trumps degrees; but YMMV.

    As far as I know, it depends on your field you want to go. At older companies like hardware stuff, a degree absolutly is important. For big corporations without, with not their main field IT, hr mostly looks for a degree.

    For webdevelopers I always would recommend going to work as fast as possible. Work experience is better than anything else.

    What exactly do you want to do?

    P.S. that's from the perspective from germany.

    @plusgut I'm planning to continue working at my current company, the team is really awesome, I'm in charge of building most of the new features and I have learned a lot from it. I just want to continue to be the guy that fixes issues and implements features quickly and properly. I don't intend to go and work for big corporations that don't give a shit about me. I prefer working in a smaller team where my work is appreciated and I'm respected for what I do. I'm not looking to earn buckets of money, I do what I do because I enjoy it (don't get me wrong, I like earning money and spending it, but I much rather be paid less and respected then be paid more where nobody appreciates what I do). Basically I want to do more than just code, I want to have a role in architecture decisions, design, UI and everything else in this category.

    @total4ever Then I don't see a reason for what a degree would benefit ;)

    When it comes to salary, a degree is helpful in the start. But in mid and longterm it doesn't matter, because nobody cares what you did 8 years ago. Then your experience in the field is what decides how valuable you are.

    P.S. that's the perspective from a developer, I never did hr that's just what I know about my own experience and my collegues.

    I think it depends where you live. Here in Germany it is absolutely nor worth your time. You only get around 300€ increase in you paycheck. In the time you get the degree you can compansate that.
