Hey Linux users. Right now I have a 2011 MacBook pro the new MacBooks you are unable to take apart so I will not buy another one. So if you had a choice of any laptop what would you choose? I do not game I am a web developer and play around with app development and I build ruby CLI's. Any suggestions on what PC? Also I'm looking at arch Linux for distro what do you guys think?

I'd say go with a ThinkPad, I have an x1 carbon running arch and it's great.

I'd also say Thinkpad. I bought one a year ago because of the Linux compatibility and to be able to upgrade the hardware.
Runs pretty well.

I once had a ThinkPad which had hardware issues and the support was absolute crap, even with an 2 business day warranty extension plan (they took over a month to send a replacement unit and it was faulty as well). I exchange it for a ProBook and so far the support from HP has been amazing (they even made me custom drivers once in order to solve an issue I was having with the hotkeys on Windows!).

I'm also trying to switch to Linux for my dev environment and so far I don't have any issue with hardware support on Mint Cinnamon (Ubuntu 17.04 with Gnome 3 is just too unstable for my taste), except for the fingerprint reader but that's known to be a hassle in Linux.

I'm not a hardware guy but I can recommend Mint and Manjaro!

Personally, ThinkPad for the battery life would be my choice. T470 especially can get 15+ hours. Arch is great if you have time to customize everything, but don't expect to be productive for about a week, and you may never be completely satisfied with your system again (always tinkering, etc)

Wow thanks guys, I was definitely not looking at the thinkpad seems like an overwhelming suggestion.

@linuxxx I have heard of mint and know a bit about it but why manjaro?

I did use elementary os for a bit but it was really glitchy.

++ on Thinkpad with Arch. I started using it almost two years ago and it's perfect.

You should look at getting a xiaomi notebook pro (on AliExpress), ram is soldered but you can upgrade the nvme SSDs.
It's powerful, thin, sleek, and the battery lasts for an eternity.

I think I might get the p71 thinkpad it seems really awesome ha

Checkout system76. They are high end Linux desktops and laptops. I have been keeping an eye on them for my next purchase when my MacBook Air goes out.

@linuxxx If I want an easy Arch I'd install Antergos.

I tried getting Manjaro to run 3 times, it was ALWAYS broken within the first hour, and the way it messes with grub alone is a reason to not use it imho.

@deadlyRants I really try to encourage people to simply install Arch. I know it is not that easy as installing it with Antergos or Manjaro, but you really learn how to set up everything. Also Arch has great documentations about how to set up all the components correctly and a helpful community.
