A colegue of mine replaced his Windows installation for Ubuntu. Then he replaced the Ubuntu wallpaper for the Windows 10 wallpaper and installed a dock with the Snow Leopard theme.

Since there's ricers in the car scene, I think he's a desktop ricer.

Developers are supposed to be eager to try new stuff, however most devs on devRant prefer to hate on Edge and hate who use it.

I'm not here to defend Microsoft but I bet 95% of the people that hate on Edge haven't tried the latest version.

It's really easy on weaker hardware and on battery life. Try using an old ultrabook (2nd gen i5) as I did for some time while using Chrome or Firefox as your main browser!

After having to use Git and Bitbucket for over 2 semestres, my teachers decided to give us a Git tutorial where the whole class had to work in the same class. This was the result.

The worst part of getting a new laptop is having to say goodbye to all the stickers you invested on your old one

So I'm in the market for a laptop and my friends don't understand why I'm being so picky. They don't understand why a laptop that weighs more than 2.0kg is heavy or why a 1366 x 768 isn't good if they have one with the same resolution and it's perfect. This mind might sound really "deep" but I feel like our laptop ends being the same as a canvas is for a painter. We spend 8 hours a day looking and working in these machines trying to create solutions for stuff that the "other people" - non-techies - take for granted. If they can be bloody picky about the pen the use to take notes in their classes and it's just a pen, why can't I be with the tool that's responsible for what I do on a daily basis and love doing?

I'm opening a case against Lenovo due to their bad warranty support. It's been over a month and a half since I reported an issue with my ThinkPad and they still haven't fixed it. The laptop was bought in September, the case opened in October and in December I still have a faulty screen with which I can't no longer work because it was frying my eyes. Note that this machine has a Warranty Extension for 3 years Onsite next business day repair.

TL;DR if you own a ThinkPad, pray that it doesn't have any hardware issues. If you're thinking about buying one, DON'T!

My college labs have iMacs for us to work with, which is rather cool. The thing is that they're 20-inch early 2008 with C2D 2.66GHz and 4GB DDR2. Add an old HDD and El Capitan to the mixture and you have a really sluggish computer that even takes time to open Safari.

I feel sorry for the ones that actually have to use them to develop os iOS with them... I'm just using them as a second monitor.

Everyone seems to have a stress ball, I have a stress dice that says "Yes", "No", "Take a break", "Tomorrow" and "Maybe". It's good for whenever I don't know I should just quit or throw the PC through the window 😅

One of the things I really hate on Windows (and Microsoft software in general) is that the keyboard shortcuts are localized therefore are different from 90% of the apps that I use on a daily basis.

Two examples of this (EN-US vs PT-PT):
- "Save" is "Gravar" while "Underline" is "Sublinhar". This means that whenever I press Ctrl + S to save a doc in MS Word I underline a word instead of saving the bloody document.
- "All" is "Tudo" so when I want to select all the itens on a folder in the File Explorer I have to press Ctrl + T, the same shortcut I press in pretty much every single tabbed app to open a new tab.

This is terrible for the user experience because different languages provide different keyboard shortcuts to the user which goes against the concept of the usefulness of a keyboard shortcut: perform an action from anywhere without having to know its menu or menu description.

Today I got the chance to try 1 of the 9 HoloLens available in my country. I'm completely mind blown. The ability to incorporate virtual elements in the real world and make them behave like real physical objects is incredible! I really hope AR gains traction to buy an headset for myself.

PS: Project X-ray is one of the most fun games I've ever played.

It's Saturday and instead of being home or going out I'm stuck in college with this two trying to learn procedures because of an assignment that I have due tomorrow. What a great way to spend my weekend!

My family got our first computer when I was in the 1st grade and I really liked it a lot.

After some years I saw someone code and I was like "What's that?". After they explained me what they were doing I was totally hyped and started searching tutorial videos on how to do simple stuff on VB (this was in my 7th grade, I believe).

By the end of my 8th grade I was introduced to a Computer Engineer that lent me a RoR book and tried to teach me the basics.
(Fun fact: around this time I was doing a Habbo clone server with a friend of mine so that we could play with our friends without all the other people poking around).

In high school I took a Computer Technician course where I learnt stuff like VB, C#, PHP, MySQL, some basic CSS/HTML plus some hardware fundamentals.

After that course I tried to enter college and I failed on my first try, so I took a gap year were I worked as a dev for my family's computer repair shop. It was really a good experience to have time for myself while working on what I loved.

Now I'm on the 2nd year of a Bachelor in Computer Engineering (It's more about software than hardware actually), currently working with Java, C, IA-32 Assembly and PL/SQL. My goal is to get a Masters in Software Engineering after it.

When I think my teachers can get any worse after sending me snippets of several Java classes in a single txt, one of them sent me SQL code of a full database dump in a Word document. 8 pages of SQL in its full glory!

I guess using the proper file extension/format or a service like PasteBin or GitHub Gist is way too advanced for them.

I'm completly hating having to work with databases at college.

I have to use my department's Oracle server to which I must connect using a VPN that fails constantly and I must use SQL Developer that hangs every single time I want to do more than a single Select with it.

Maybe next year I finish this course unit.

So I was with my friends on the subway and we were talking about an assigment we have due this week with trees in Java. I got to say, the face on the old ladie next to us when we said "we must kill all the children left in the tree" was just epic! She must thought we were talking about beating some little kids or something... 😅

I find really funny how the new 13" Retina MacBook Pro with Touch Bar costs more than my BTO 15" MacBook Pro (hi-res anti-glare) did back in 2010.

We all love that colleague that swears he didn't make the method that's making 2 different functionalities not work 5 hours before the deadline even when git blame clearly shows he was the one to make changes.

Let's call my college colleague Andrew.

Andrew knows that we have a really tight deadline to complete 2 different assignments to deliver in the same weekend for evaluation.

Andrew says that we really knows about coding, although we doesn't understand the most basic principles about OOP (like encapsulation, for example).

Whenever I asked for help, Andrew said that is "going to do some research" and that what I'm asking is "really hard". He then asked every single other group if then could provide him, with some code so he could "understand" what I asked him to do.

Once they said "no" he would come and tell me he really tried but hadn't be able to do it, 2 days after needed it, delaying the whole project.

Don't be like Andrew.
