Uhmmm. Why is the merch hoodie left handed? I always look like a moron at the zipper for a good 2 seconds not knowing what to do before I realize that the zipper is left handed :D

@Kimmax to be able to distinguish between women and men clothes. And I mean it for real, here in Switzerland you can see that everywhere. The clothes for women all have lefthanded zippers while men have righthanded ones

@trogus @dfox all my zippers on jackets etc I have here have the part you move on the left side, so you stick the right side of the jacket in "the zipper". The hoddie is the other way around, you put the left side of the jacket in the zipper on the right side

@Kimmax this is probably an American thing maybe. I’ve only seen zippers the way it’s done on the hoodie. Since most people are right-handed, the zipper is on the right so it’s easier to pull up.

I just looked through my closet, 2/3rds of my jackets have zippers on the right, 1/3rd on the left. One jacket was my brother's gf's which had the zipper on the right. Seemed pretty random

i just looked through my jackets, which i have 7 of. 6 are from the us, 1 from the uk.

the 6 were all right handed, while the 1 uk one i bought at emirates stadium (COYG!) was leftie.

The side of the zipper was inherited from the side of the buttons, which have been around much, much longer.

Buttons are on the left side of women's clothing and the right side of men's. There are a few theories as to why this difference came about, the most popular having to do with getting dressed.
During the Renaissance and Victorian periods, wealthy women were probably dressed by their servants more than they dressed themselves (and the opposite is true for wealthy men of this time). Having the buttons on the left side of women's clothing made it easier for right-handed servants to fasten the buttons, and having the buttons on the right side of men's clothing made it easier for the wearer to fasten the buttons.

There are other theories too, including providing easy access to weapons for soldiers.
