I find it so amazing to see when my colleagues (or even me) are irritated/annoyed to the fucking point, swearing around and so on but then the phone rings and they are completely calm/sound nice/happy when they pick it up one second later. (we're Linux support engineers)

This job is the best fucking self control training I've ever had!

Isn't it common to pick up every call(expect very very few) gently?

@github Of course it is but it's sometimes so amazing to see how a completely raging engineer can go from losing his shit to calm/nice in one fucking second!

After working in a call center, and in retail, I can attest to this.

It's called your retail voice. You take on an entirely different persona -- someone nice and friendly who isn't stressed, and become them for awhile.

@Root so much this it hurts. My current team knows that voice and runs...

@QueenMorgana I use that voice when I have to deal with people I can't stand otherwise. Most of them still don't realize it!

I do this myself a bit. It's hard to hold back the irritation until after you've slammed the phone back in the cradle.

    *phone rings*
Me: *screams gutterally at the ringing phone*
    *phone bursts in to flames*
    *phone contemplates what is phone*
*phone reincarnates as phone that is at peace with universe*
Me: *ceases screaming at phone, best professional voice in world, should get Guinness record* hello, how may I help you today?
