Froot75547yThat fact that bitbucket is still in business, considering that there are alternatives like Github and Gitlab, is a glitch.
-
JS96185347y@NGPixel I use GitHub now almost for everything, had one old project still on bitbucket but yes, it was a bad idea.
-
gnuuu667yPlease stop using both GitHub and Bitbucket. Use an open source alternative. Ever wondered why open source projects are hosted on a closed source platform? I just don't get it. It's crazy that we use proprietary software to develop free and open source programs.
-
@gnuuu honestly I wish I could use GitLab for all my repositories, but GitHub is the industry standard.
-
JS96185347y@gnuuu not everyone can afford a private server to use an open source alternative.
I don't see anything wrong in GitHub. -
gnuuu667y@JS96, @DuckyMcDuckFace
I get that. The only problem with GitHub is that it's not open source. To develop open source software we use a proprietary platform. That makes us hypocrites. Plus if GitHub goes down for whatever reason what are we gonna do? If it was open source there could be multiple sites like that, with the same interface, hosted by different people, with the same projects. -
brod100267y@gnuuu why does everything have to be open and free and magical? People gotta pay the bills somehow.
-
Froot75547y@gnuuu Yea I agree with the rest here. There's nothing wrong with github, not everything has to be open source. Github has proven over and over that it's in the same camp with the developers, they're a decent company. So I don't mind them making money, I prefer it actually, makes sure they keep doing business.
Also, you want a fragmented system over a centralised one? That's stupid, working with your system would be horrible, keeping it in sync would be horrible. You'd just have a system where instead one place to go, you'd have a zillion, each different than the other. It's stupid. -

I don't mind GitHub making money but I would prefer if it was open source :). I'm sure there is a way for open source projects to make money. But it most likely will never be that so we need an open source alternative to GitHub.
What I described was just an idea. I don't know how syncing would work but it must be possible because there are GitHub repos that are synced with project's own hosted repo. Linux kernel for example. That's why I assume it must be possible. Those sites wouldn't be too different from each other. They would be open source so everything could be compatible. You could just pick one and use only that and switch to another one only if your favourite site went down.
So that's my idea. What I think is stupid is having a single point of failure and being forced to use closed source software for development of open source. I don't hate the GitHub company. I just think that we software developers could do better than that :).

I never thought that 2 days of service downtime can be called a "minor glitch". 🤔
