So my Girlfriend bought a new iPhone at Verizon today. Cool story, I know, but here's where it's gone from there.

Firstly her debit wouldn't run as credit, so we used mine but that's the least of it (but began it).

So she has 16,000 photos... Alot, sure, but not the issue. Obviously with that amount of data she wasn't about to reasonably use iCloud to back it up (understandable only by me) so she was confronted both by me and the Verizon employee about this issue to where we both (the Verizon employee and I) agreed that an iTunes backup/restore was the only way to preserve her data. She was confused. No worry, told her I had it handled and the Verizon employee agreed. Great. Yet we get home and begin the process. My girlfriend was not on the latest iOS (understandable given the battery scenario and she was on an iPhone 6) and this was ridiculous to her because she had to update in order to do the iTunes back up. Whatever, I brushed it off. Her phone was updated, and backed up... Which took a while but we are talking 30gb (of which she had no understanding of how much that was). After the back up we discovered her new phone wasn't working due to a bad sim, great, no problem we have the old one... But oh no. "I don't want that shitty old sim" she said. Uhmm what... I say, and say let me get an earring (to switch the Sims) and she gave one to me and as soon as I went to pop the tray, she had a fucking heart attack as if I was demolishing her phone. I talk her down, get it switched, get the phone to restore (slow process as she's complaining... 30gb mind you) and it works. She goes to bed. Comes back, texts aren't working. I say imessages or texts (now she has no idea) I troubleshoot, seems nothing's working, and that's okay Verizon must of reinstated the new sim and deactivated the old (fine). I switch them and it works. She proceeds to berate me about the SIM cards because she didn't want the 'old shitty one' (the one that got us to the place of a functioning phone).

Now everything works and she claims a Genius bar employee would of done this in minutes.

I (obviously) lose my shit, now I'm sleeping on the couch.

Im an IT professional / programmer..... this shit really ticked me off.

Lol this is gold. Classic relationships.

    ..16,000 photos..

How... how is she your girlfriend? Excuse my french but she seems like a proper grade a retard from that description.

Also, on an android phone (nexus at least) that process would have consisted of 2 steps:
    1) throw your old phone in the river
    2) log into your new one
Done! Everything is by default always backed up. Just another thing I love about android ☺️

Anyhow, hang in there man πŸ˜„

@Nilo-jxn I feel like a bastard because I'm ranting (as a Dev) but this isn't quite a Dev Rant, yet the context (of the post and me included) seemed enough to post my horror story.
  • 15
@irene you say that as a technologically competent person, yet one must understand the plight of plebians
  • 8
@ctmalloy mmmmm nah. Fuck em! πŸ˜„
  • 6
@Froot Oh I know, I bit my tongue when I was about to say, "It's crazy because iPhones used to be the Pinnacle of migration" As for her as my GF, you must have some knowledge of the fact that technogically incompetent people will always be around.
  • 3
@Froot I even posted this on reddit and this, this I tell you, is what I've been waiting for.
  • 2
    @ctmalloy Mmmh that's true.
  • 2
@ctmalloy What do you mean? πŸ˜„
  • 5
@irene Well, I get you, but in our situation (my GF and I, and the fact that this wasn't an upgrade for the capitalist fun of it all) I don't blame her for being concerned about her almost $1k investment, especially because she's clueless.
  • 4
    @Froot you've satisfied me m8, no homo.
  • 5
@irene Vendor in a sense of service and product, I agree. Yet, try and tell someone who's never owned anything but an iPhone to switch and you're stuck in their ignorance. I could use that as a reason to not be with someone but that's as superficial and ridiculous as their reasoning for being an iPhone fanboy/fangirl. So I don't let it be a thing. I just think it's small minded is all. Not to say I wouldn't want my SO to see me eye to eye on this. It's just that as far as an SO goes, this tech related thing is pretty stupid.
  • 9
@irene Xiao mi? My gf called her working sim card shitty just because it was the older one... How do you think she's to understand a Chinese iPhone rip off? I'm all for your finding your SO who understands the intricacies of the social/professional circle you spend your time in but that's just not wholeheartedly realistic.

Edit: I don't wanna be an asshole or preacher, but it seems to me you need to be realistic with the fact that most people you interact with are not internet/technological people and if you limit yourself to being friendly and personal with those people you're no worse than them for being incompetent on the subject. I'm sorry if this comes off as rude, but I'm just sharing wisdom.

Why are you putting yourself to this torturing ? You can do better than that.
  • 3
@HoloDreamer You say that, but read through the comments on this post and if you still think so, you may, and I say may, be missing the most logical point of this argument
  • 3
I would've died from the amount of stress accumulating in my heart πŸ˜‚
  • 4
@ChrRubin My death was in the form of maximum decibels while claiming her ignorance/my worth hence me on the couch
  • 3
@ctmalloy Good luck man, had a similar experience before that ended quite poorly…πŸ˜…
  • 3
@ChrRubin you're still a good man, don't let anyone tell you different

Been there bro one time my girlfriend freak out because she couldn’t get her wireless adapter from her laptop to work and I had to configure it (not really just turn it off/on ) and she think geeky squad could of done a better job of fixing it I’m like “pssh geeky squad my a$$”
  • 3
Don't worry mate, she'll soon be back for the rod πŸ˜€
Otherwise yeah I can see your frustration. Not backing up 16.000 photos is insane anyway. I still think the I Cloud or whatever sync should take care of it no problem. Imagine if the stone got bricked. Then you'd have to deal with her after just losing all her precious photos. Fuckin hell.

@irene Why'd someone downvote your comments on this thread?! Anyways, that's fixed now.
  • 2
@irene Well I might not always agree with you but nothing offensive or so in your comments so then I find downvotes unfair!
  • 3
@linuxxx indeed, @irene only wrote things that i also thought and i am a nice guy, not like skeletor. Hes a badass and totally deserves to rule over eternia. I mean who would want he-man as a ruler also panthor is way cooler the battlecat too.

    myaaaaah!
  • 4
I would hate her so much.
  • 2
@irene @Hammster @linuxxx Damn He-man that fool, a royal boob like him and his prince loving tin hat guard should never be allowed to rule.
  • 7
@ctmalloy The problem ain't her technical level, but her poor reaction to your help.
It's like you write a small app for a non-developer for free, but they give you shit about your choice of architecture model... Fuck that for flavored chips!

I feel you, but its an iPhone, it just works hahah

also, don't listen to relationship advices from IT guys, we don't know what were talking about :D
  • 3
Been there done this. Now she does this her own and I walk out of the room..
  • 5
@irene tbh breaking up and having sex with multiple other partners sounds better then cheating :P
  • 3
@irene indeed just with less bad karma

    This needs more parentheses

@Unobtainium I like my English how I like my Lisp

You are IT professional right, so you are supposed to do "IT stuff" like fix smartphone/laptop, etc

I'm reading through your story and for some reason its Kevin Hart's voice i hear and gestures i see πŸ˜…

I recently switched from an iPhone 6 to an iPhone 8+ and I can assure you that the process is seamless. Ios11 actually prompts you “if you have another phone just hold it near the new one” (words to that affect) and everything just copies over. The Ui for the process is amazingly slick.

    The problem here is two-fold

    1) she wasn’t backing her phone up
    2) she wasn’t up to date with the software

Both of which I would class as PICNIC:

    Problem
    In
    Chair
    Not
    In
    Computer
