I regularly want to send pictures from my work phone to my private one and I've got WhatsApp installed on my work phone but no way in hell it's getting on my private phone.

Was thinking about how to exchange those images easily...

I now have Signal on my work phone as well and I can chat with my private phone 😊

@Koutsie The reviews on its crypto are bad and they don't do anything to even try to hide/protect metadata. I only use it for one person and that'll be the most I'll ever use it for!

Android? Rooted? Is scp or rsync over ssh an option? On iOS Pythonista seems neat for using python scripting in some basic ways on a non jailbroken phone. I’m guessing you’re an Android guy though.

Nextcloud on your server and the client on both phones with autoupload of pictures maybe? I trust in my own installation and never had to worry about syncing my pictures and other data since I set it up.

Another option, Nextcloud is a pretty slick way to roll your own Dropbox-like system. The mobile apps have a specific option to keep photos synced too. I’m still on owncloud personally, but nextcloud was an OC project split that is more in line with software freedom and the open source ideals. Technically OC is Open Source, but if you’re starting from scratch go with Nextcloud! I’m gonna convert to NC as soon as I have time.

@agaskins moving to NC was quite easy. Trying out "Talk" at the moment to replace WhatsApp or other Videomessengers with my own with an "inner circle of friends" but can not say more about it at this early stage.
But @linuxxx, according to your privacy attitude you should really give it a try :)

@linuxxx Don't you're phones support android beam? It works over NFC, so it's secure too (anyone intercepting the connection would need to be less than 1m away).

If not there's the open source app Treble Shot (available from F-Droid).

There is app that my friend has been developing. Keeps your photos in sync (actually any media file) without any communication with any server. Works offline and on wifi-direct so you can be rest assured that none of the files are being accessed or snooped in any manner. Do give it a try.

Make a simple app that uploads to your server and download it. maybe make like server.url/piccode01 and when you type that in, download pic

Ah OK, got it. TALK is a videoconf/chat plug in for nextcloud (find it in the list of plug-ins) and there are "Nextcloud Talk" applications in the market/store. Found it interesting cause it could be an alternative to WhatsApp but I don't have to trust in a Blackbox and "own" the service.

@linuxxx I can only underline what @marcom is saying: If you're not using nextcloud yet, you should immediately try it (especially with your new internet connection). For me it replaced e. g. DropBox-like services, Google calendar, syncing my contacts over Google and so on - I know, stuff you don't use in the first place, but I can't imagine you found a better alternative than nextcloud. As of version 13.0, nextcloud even supports e2e encryption for your files.

@linuxxx I use OC only because I’ve been lazy (although I’ve been told it’s a painless upgrade). I’d go NextCloud if at all possible. Also the app lets you send any files you like, and provides a mechanism for keeping photos synced (which is probably what you want). I thought you said you had Nextcloud already, but maybe I misunderstand. There’s a lot of ideas flying around here haha. Anyways, I wouldn’t consider it like critically secure since it’s only using SSL and a server that needs to be at least a tiny bit accessible. But that said, unless you have a lot of people actively attacking you I think it’s more than adequate. I mean you can encrypt the files so that even a server breach probably wouldn’t be the end of the world... again, unless you are doing some crazy shit and people are dead set on getting your photos haha. In which case you should probably be encrypting them to an archive on a thumb drive, inside a balloon and inserted deep inside.... ;P

@agaskins Nextcloud supports end to end encryption now.

But (properly configured) TLS is already secure if you own the server.

To test your server configuration you can use the official nextcloud security scan (https://scan.nextcloud.com/) and Qualsys' ssl tester (https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/).

Btw, @linuxxx, do you actually use nextcloud? It sounds like you don't...

@Jilano Thanks! I don't use it since it stores metadata on the servers and doesn't remove data which isn't absolutely necessary to keep but if you don't mind that, it's a great service!
