I was reading a book and came across this :
"
What if you were a doctor and had a patient who demanded that you stop all the silly hand-washing in preparation for surgery because it was taking too much time? Clearly the patient is the boss; and yet the doctor should absolutely refuse to comply. Why? Because the doctor knows more than the patient about the risks of disease and infection. It would be unprofessional (never mind criminal) for the doctor to comply with the patient. So too it is unprofessional for programmers to bend to the will of managers who don’t understand the risks of making messes.
"
It's fair point but at the same time we have to comply with the manager in order to have a raise/promotion. What do you think guys ?

That is true, but it's a risky choice to mindlessly follow manager suggestions. You might get the promotion, but if the suggestions lead to complete mess how likely is the manager to take responsibility (Taking into consideration you provided suitable amount of insight and conveyed the issues to the manager) and not throw you under the bus?

“I was just following orders” will still get you sent to jail. If your manager doesn’t like pushback go find one that does.

Uncle Bob “Clean code”? Code quality is must, and whoever says otherwise just go fuck yourself. It’s your job as professional to make decisions about software design, not manager’s, if he doesn’t realise that, well, again, go fuck yourself. But from my personal experience usually manager doesn’t even needs to know how you design the system, unless its rewrite/refactoring.

That's why we should be able to knock them out cold..

The doctors are already one step ahead of the game..

@TheLazyDev not mindlessly but more in the process of finding the right balance (sometimes he has deadlines, clients and bosses)
