Possible but quite unlikely, you'd think OP would have mentioned if it was charging just before.

My guess would be that they have a reserve battery level with a shutdown switch programmed to be based upon the current battery's design capacity instead of the original capacity. Throwing down easy but unrealistic numbers just for the sake of easier math, let's say the original design capacity was 1000mah and the software is programmed to shutdown at 5% original capacity at 50mah. Well if your battery is worn, and it's worn to around 900mah max then 5% of the original design is now 45mah, assuming the device is hard coded to shutoff at 5% of it's available capacity (including wear) it would be able to sink below 50mah depending on how worn your battery is. And since the application is probably designed in a way that tracks design capacity, it sees a device with 45mah when 50mah is baseline zero, and it throws a negative number. Purely speculation.
