That moment when you change your username because you a get a bit too paranoid of your stalker-ish manager finding you here
But i start to get why so many people want to divide their online footprint into as many instances as possible, the less is know, the less traceable you are14 -
That one time when i just got my first job and I was new to everything aaaaand my aunt have already started to pitch the idea of me making some company with one of my second cousins (because he was studying for some business degree and i was the tech one)
I mean, I understand the wish to do things "in family", but family and money should never mix imo2 -
Did someone here ever got to use Station?
https://getstation.com/
Was it any good? As far as my understanding goes, the company went bankrupt and made the product open source.
But it doesn't work for some, as most of the messaging services pushed for a higher minimum browser version than the Chrome used by Station.
This sucks, but i am curious if it's worth trying to fix it at this point. Maybe find some people interested in this project as well or even make a project proposition here, on devRant, to fix it and make usable for the community.2 -
Wasting about an hour trying to leave detailed comments and suggestions for a fellow student on an university project's code.
Said person just respond on the team group with "If anyone does not like something, he/she can go ahead to change it, so we would move on faster"
THEN WHY THE FUCK ARE WE STILL DOING CODE REVIEWS???6 -
why would you have 3 people interviewing a candidate if you all are gonna talk half as much as a normal person
It's just awkward to be there2 -
Why would you send me an email that "the opening is not longer available" when you're going to list the job again 3 more times in the same month??
At least be honest! i'm a big boy, i can handle it.6 -
I really invested into this work from home lifestyle, moving in an appartment where i could have my own office, upgrading my personal workstation, leaving overpriced locations close to subways behind.. so i do hope it will remain like this for at least a few more years (or why not, even forever for dev roles)
It's way better than a shitty office placed in location equally incomfortable for everyone
Otherwise.. well, there is always the option to go freelancing from home3 -
Today i saw someone complaining that you have to edit a config file on ubuntu to change the behaviour of the laptop when you close the lid, which in my opinion is simple enough.
But what triggered me was another argument saying that how it would be if cars will require a mechanics degree to drive them.
Well maybe then there won't be so many fucking idiots on the road blocking the traffic in almost every fucking city bigger than a peanut plantation.
I swear, people believe they deserve to use the best things without a single clue about how they work.5 -
The day google put advertising before the advertising, we went through a new industrial revolution..
..only that we are the child workers stuck in the factories longer than the sun is on the sky -
I just love how companies would go to any length to motivate you to work more!
As long as it doesn't cost them more than peanuts..13 -
Limitation as a way to force creativity. What do you think about this?
Platforms such as Vine or Twitter limits you somehow, but people still found a way to build their creativity around and grow a following. At the same rate, most Game Jams give you a theme and sometimes some kind of limitations and the result is in almost every jam at least a few interesting games.
Now, looking specifically at dev work, some frameworks or languages limit you somehow. Lets think about Rust safety or Node single threadness.
Do you think those work as limitation to enhance creativity as well? Not necessary by design.6 -
I love tools such as IntelliSense or Copilot, don't get me wrong!
But i still have a deep rooted fear that one day, developers will become so dependent on those luxuries, that we will become practically unable to write code on our own, without our cloud overlords blessings.
Until, you know.. the server for such a service will crash and no one will know how to fix it without its own help. *see Palpatine meme reference*15 -
I think the best feeling is seeing you pet project slowly developing and growing.
I think the worst feeling is hearing someone 'meh'-ing while talkingabout it. 😓2 -

Sooo not so long ago, i was saying something about my recent first interview. I passed it and it felt so good and that kind of made me proud. But now it is even better! I just got my first peanuts as a developer and i must say "boy, it felt good" !
Thank you all, members of the devRant community for always giving me not only courage to try, ideas to research and reasons to laugh, but the most importantly: some insights of how things are out there. For a introvert like me it is really great to not simply step into the darkness, blindfolded 😁
Cheers to you all! 😘 -
i just love /r/hacking, best funny pics reddit i have ever seen.
Also, who would have tought rhat hackers are some of the most politest people?7 -
Before someone is losing their tits, i know it is an old pic, i have seen it before, but it still gives me a good laugh every time, especially as i am from eastern europe myself 😁10

Dudes and dudettes, i shall ask you all one question: what is the thing/hobby (or things/hobbies) that you always wanted to get into and never gor the chance?
For me i thing first would be brewing, as i would love to refer to myself as a "Brewmaster" like in Warcraft (bonus points if i wear a panda costume) more then an "Engineer" (a trust worthy one even), but i think i might have the chance to as soon as i will have the chance (and means) to move alone as i already know a few things from my dad. The second would be something really cool i saw on reddut and made me remember the old times when i will watch timelapses in this topic on you tube: Crystal growing! Like, middle school chemistry, not meth! At least for now.. 🤔 Anyway, here is a nice pic with some dude's work, looking forward to hear abiut yours!!
PS: Bonus Points for a pic related to the thingie!8 -
No, the language is not stupid :) No, it is not a problem of the language, it's just the fact that you don't really understand how to use it properly :) i think this is something each of us hates to hear while frustated but needs to hear afterwards, bad design is a posibility tho, but 99.999% of the cases is our fault. face it, nd overcome it! and finally, to grow beyond it 😄

/* devRant factions talk */
i noticed lately that the community of devRant started to form some kind of cores, like factions, which as a RPG enthusiast i can say it's awesome.
But as i kind of falled behind with news of the community (sadly) and i became kind of lost.
My request is: can we keep the evidence of all those factions (big and small) here? No need for much husle, all we have to do it's to mention their name, their particularities (bg color, symbols), their members traits or requirements to become one and maybe, if there is one, an icon or logo 😊
i'm looking forward to see all of devRants factions here. Cheers! -
My fellow Linux Gamers, how do you DO IT?? I mean, my laptop is not some beast (it was 5 years ago, but now is old and tired) but it was able to run (not the smoothies way possible) games like Dishonored 2 on windows, but now that i am full-time Ubuntu user and i am stuck to minimal games i ask myself:
HOW DO YOU RUN SOMETHING POST-MARIO ON THIS SHIT?? i even tried wine with play on linux and even Gothic 1 runs like a slug..
Please, help a fellow gamer and linux enthusiast to understand where to look for a more performant experience 😔12 -
Hide yo' wives and yo' onanism, the haxors are cumin... i mean, coming for you!
Found on Reddit :D10 -
I made that request a month ago or so, not long after i started to use devrant more often than any other app, and i can say only that i am glad that i pressed "install" that time when i found it in the GoogleStore.
Thank you all for making this community more like a family than a refuge!
Truth is i feel a little bad now for doing that but i might be able to repay the founders and all mambers of this community somehow, someday. And i am looking forward to do it 😁
Cheers!4 -
Depends. If the schedule is busy enough, i try to carry on and focus on simpler, low-effort high-reward tasks so i don't stagnate.
If there is nothing getting burned in the oven i just call it the day and go out or relax with some game/show ^_^
I feel like all this "keep calm and carry on" mindset to solves crisis is just the result of bad micro-management of the society as a whole, but maybe i just get filosophical and anarhist when i'm low on motivation 🤔
