I just noticed that when you do The Nod™ to other men, you nod up if you know the person and you nod down if they are strangers.

    An astute observation.

I think nodding up is like saying "what's up?"and is a more informal approach' , and nodding down just means "hello " i nod up when I see my friends on the street but when I see my teachers and other seniors I just nod down and smile

I'm not a man but I do the Nod: smile and nod down.

I only nod up if I want to talk to the person.. It has a kind of challenging undertone I guess. If you do it really hard and multiple times it can also be understood as a taunt or challenge to fight.
Nodding down is more going towards a bow and shows respect or non-aggression.

In a class where we learn about communication stuff and differences between countries, the professor made us realize that the nod down is a slight remnant of the time we had to do a reverence in front of noble people

You nod up to a stranger that's eyeballing your woman, that's for sure.
