Software accommodates transformations between the inconsistent fuzzy world of human behavior to the complex structured world of data storage, and back.
AI can analyze large amounts of similar patterns, and then recognize/create things along that same pattern. Development is a continuous creation of new patterns, based on a "higher degree" metapattern: societal demand for certain interfaces, services and platforms.
AI will eventually take over chunks of programming work. It will provide us with larger building blocks to puzzle with. It might tell you: You have a DB here, let me map an API over it, you have an API here, let me write an interface for that.
But you still have to steer heavily, until AI learns to interpret client demands. That is currently even beyond human capability.
So it might lead to higher velocity in development, maybe less developers needed. But the demand for software/apps is still extremely high, so I think it will elastically grow for a long time.
People are worried that AI will replace them in their jobs.
But guys.
We are still using php.
I think we are safe for the next 200 years.
