Is there a really good reason to drop Ubuntu in favour of antergos base?

No. Finish your thesis and everything first before starting this.

Now, once you're done, feel free to have fun! The main difference will be that Antergos (Arch based) is a rolling release distribution. So on top of Pacman (that many people love), you'll have the latest toys to play with (and break).

I definitely recommend trying it out, but not now that you have some more important matters on your mind. You don't need the hassle ;)
