I can't help but think the red headphones in the avatar are Beats. Those are terrible headphones! PLEASE ADD SOME NON DECREPIT BLACK ONES.
It makes me angry every time I see them.11
On reccomendation of @chabad360 I made this its own rant.
I switched from marketing to CS (complete with a three year degree, no Bootcamp). I still went to interviews as you'd expect a marketing man to go; in a suit. Commence the weirdest interview.
I: "You're not the typical engineer. Can you talk to real engineers?"
M: "could you elaborate"
I:"you're dressed in a suit. That leads me to think you're a MS user. Do you think you could talk to real, ie. Linux using engineers?"
M: " well, I haven't used windows in about a year soo..
I: "Mac isn't Linux."
M: "I'm aware. I've switched to Ubuntu so I could use KVM-QEMU android emulator with GPU pass through to train Deep Convolution Networks on mobile devices. Also had to compile Google's internal build tool because it had bugs I had to fix so I could compile the APK."
I: "ah, Ubuntu eh? **Insert Smirk** How about a follow-up?"
M: "no, I'm switching to Gentoo this week and would like to talk to real engineers about that."
I thanked him for the coffee and left.3

"The Things That I Love"
A sleeping girlfriend.
A terrace in a warm summer night with a power outlet.
A cold beer.
A pack of cigarettes.
A working WiFi.
A pair of charged Bose 35 QuietComforts.
A minimal electro playlist.
A peace of mind, attainable solely through solitude.11
Hello devRant from Croatia!
Nothing like a day of breezy beach with sunshine and, to finish off the day, learn some Spring-Boot!
Enjoy your holidays!9
For those of your who have been following me, I would like to announce that I have received a perfect score for my bachelor thesis (OnDeviceAI, ie. Training neural networks in mobile phones.5
Turns laptop off
Writes key todo list on mini white board for tomorrow.
Wait a minute, i think i know how to do that!
Turns laptop back on to see if i'm right.
Gets too exited for sleep because thing works4
I'm trying to generate a PDF from a website (https://devhints.io/react) on Ubuntu, but the two packages I tried (htmldoc and htmltopdf) both split the code at onto separate pages. I'm trying to have the code blocks on one page or start a new page and then have the title of the code block and the code block.
Technically not andev rant but fuck it. This pusses me off no no end.
PC gaming as I used to love it, is ending.
E3 for pc gamers was a death march. With the exception of hitman and just cuz 4, which are both more of the same. Don't get me wrong, I'll play them both because they're good fun, but look at the PS4 lne up. Control, Anthem, Detroit and more, all NEW IPs.
Meanwhile over in PC world we get the 50th billionth Battle Royal and (surprise) another JC.
I couldn't even being myself to finish Origin (WHICH WANT EVEN A GOD DAMN ORIGIN STORY)
I'll have to get a PS4. I just LOATHE playing FPS with a controller.
Oh, yeah, and a new fallout. With one mode. Which is great because it means I get to be fragged and tea bagged by 9 year old Asian kids..6
I want to intall a bare bones Linux set up with i3-wm. I'm looking at a Base antergos installation and continue to configure from there. Do you thing that this is a good place to start after using i3-wm on Ubuntu or would you recommend another distribution?
To add to it, the laptop ideally uses Nvidia Optimus5
Her: What do you do?
Me: I'm writing my thesis on bringing AI to smartphones.
Her: I think AI is terrible!
Me: oh, you are an engineer too?
Me: oh, you've studied economics and or ethics and are worried about its implications on society?
Her: No, but have you?
Me: I have a degree in economics, an MBA and an now about to get my BSc in CS.
Her: well, regardless I still think it's terrible.
Me: well in that case how about you shove your unfounded opinion where the sun don't shine!29
Came across this comment on r/programminghorror/
> We're you talking with my co-worker? He's extremely abrasive, especially when it comes to anyone touching his code because "Now I don't know how it works anymore"
Handed off my code to Devs working on main products. Long presentation explaining everything.
Have discussion afterwards about what it does, but not how it looks.
They say thank you, I say you're welcome, and since this is my first bigger project, if they have some pointers or glaring defects in the code I'd welcome the feedback.
They all start laughing. I do too but in my head I'm like "wtf, I ask for feed back and you laugh? That's."
It's been bothering me.2
IT WORKS! IT WORKS! I CAN TRAIN AM AI DIRECTLY ON MY PHONE!!!
I'm opening my thesis with the quote
"Ok. Now if you don't mind, I need to concentrate. What I'm about the attempt next is on the tricky side of damn near impossible"
Now for building am inference mechanism and theny Bachelor's Thesis is SAVED!
Suck on THAT every master of AI who claimed it wasn't possible due to computational constraints.
"Just" have to type it up now
Seriously, fuck Bazel. It's the most unintuitive build tool I have ever had the displeasure of coming across.
It works, but try compiling an Android app, that uses deps from gmaven, maven and jcenter and has java, as well as native dependencies.
It's fucking impossible.
Should I wipe my duel boot Ubuntu/Windows and install antergos base + X + i3-wm during my final month of thesis?
Is there a really good reason to drop Ubuntu in favour of antergos base?3
Ok, I get it, stickers are "cool". However, every time I see a laptop full of them I can't help but think three things.
1) Why on earth would your ruin a perfectly nice, clean, design.
2) I see the stickers and think "wow, (s)he must really be a fan of a lot of tech companies
3) I think your were one of those kids in school that glued stickers of skateboard apparel manufacturers to your backpack because it was the "cool" thing to do.
But mainly the ruined design thing bothers me. Just..... WHY!?!16
FML. All those "train your own object detection" articles can go burn in hell. Not even TFs pertained models work!13
Got rid in Windows completely because I realised I could never mine without the i3-wm. I can't help but remember when my Pokémon leveled up way back in the day and think
"Congratulations! Your polaroidkidd has evolved! 😅
God damn the android camera 2 API is a giant pain in the ass. First I got it all working on my emulator, then I thought "hey let's set how it looks on my fancy phone!.... Oh... Ok."..
So at much fiddling I managed to merge the Google sample with my requirements and got it working on my phone. Then I'm sitting in the train, fire up the emulator and to my surprise IT STOPPED WORKING ON THE EMULATOR AAARRHH!
anyway, it's working on my device which will suffice for now.
Now I'm trying to chop the video into images and... Wait... Google... What do you mean your don't support the Java media framework?!?
Ok, so I got everything running on Ubuntu 17.10. switched to i3 because holy mother of God is never have to resize a window again!
Switched to using the Von editor mode in IntelliJ because dear lord is it faster!
I love all of it. The only problem? Instead of the 6-10 hours of battery I got in Windows, I get MAX 2 hours in Ubuntu because it's always using the Nvidia card and switching to the integrated Intel causes an instant log out after the log in. (Tried everything already, nothing works)
Still, I love it.3
Ok Google. Thank you for providing a sample app to take a picture. Also, FU for making the basic sample camera 2 fragment in excess of 1000 lines of code.
Seriously, Ubuntu can go burn in hell far as I care.
I've spent the better part of my morning attempting to set it up to run with the correct Nvidia drivers, Cuda and various other packages I need for my ML-Thesis.
After countless random freezes, updates,. Downgrades and god-knows-what, I'm going back to Windows 10 (yes, you read that right). It's not perfect but at least I don't have to battle with my laptop to get it running. The only thing which REALLY bothers me about it is the lack of GPU pass-through, meaning running local docker containers rely solely on the CPU. In itself not a huge issue if only I didn't NEED THE GOD DAMN GPU FOR THE TRAINING22
Going out with my mate to celebrate his end of exams when in truth I want to stay at home and work through the androidMVP Dagger2/Retrofit2/RxJava tutorials :/
