When you double-tap a word on your phone, it will select the whole word.
The difference between iPhone and Android is that if that word is a part of a name, it will select the whole name, not just that word. If you double-tap “Smith” in “John Smith”, it will select the whole thing.
That’s all you need to know. It’s the little things.

Had to test this, since I swear I have had this happen on my phone before. But no

When you double tap a word on your phone, if the app developer cared about text selection, knew how to make text selectable, wanted you to be able to select that text, and didn't have a different selection mechanic that shadows system-wide controls, it will select the whole word.

When you use the text selection tool on Samsung phones, all text, no matter what the app developer configured, and even against their wishes becomes selectable, without any room for accidental or deliberate app-specific overrides, so long as it is presented to the OS as text.

The only thing I don't understand is why this feature isn't available on all Android phones if it's already supported by the OS.

Tested this in JoyRant on iOS and it selects only one word, not both.

Seems to be a custom selection logic by a particular app.

Also, to be fair, and I say this as an iOS fan, I prefer single word selection even for names.

My android can hang in selection mode, especially using WhatsApp. It forces you to select anything and you can't change start selection wherever you click. You have to send your message or just delete all to continue if your start selection is wrong.

Having the issue I just described right now. Can't quit this any way. By coincidence some kiki memes in screenshot and her sick react bash rant which is worth a read.

Weird, it works in this textfield but not in the other textfield. The only difference being that the other is read only.

and I'm over here fighting vscode trying to be "helpful" with adding closing tags when I simply write the opening ones...

it does not work like the editor thinks it's working

@retoor I wonder if it is because you're using MS Swift key instead of gboard. Google and their assumptions of integration and all that
