spyke14617yYeah I'm not entirely sure that would be a good thing, wouldn't they try to monetize it?
-
spyke14617y@MrCSharp this is true, idk if they could try and squeeze more money out of the platform, but that's a really good point, hopefully if they do buy it, it's done right
-
@spyke yes i hope so too. Remember Xamarin was super expensive until MS bought it and now it is free. Hopefully this means free private repos on GitHub like butbucket and VSO offer.
-
@Torbuntu i use Visual studio online and it is pretty good. All my private repos are on it. When was the last time you used it?
-
@Torbuntu hey look, no product works perfectly for everyone so if you didn't satisfy your needs then that's fair enough
-
Nawap13727y@spyke
They wouldn't , since it's a bad marketing strategy!
If u acquire something and monetise his freebies!
U can expect to get more free stuff and more enterprise features for little big cost!
Btw, if he monetise all , we shift to gitlab, bitbucket, etc. -
@Torbuntu i can relate to that... I am forced to use tools I don't like at work even when there is clearly a better option
-
@dontPanic no i was joking... You actually convinced me that this is a bad thing and MS sucks... /s

Qwby4157yOh great, maybe they will put the Windows 10 source code on GitHub so the community can fix that mess and we can finally get a usable mainstream OS again. Or they can create a no-bullshit, no-crapware and no-ads branch, wow the possibilities are endless!
-
It would really make sense. They have been doing a lot of stuff with gitHub lately. Even the VSTS has lots of cool DevOps integrations with gitHub.
-
Qwby4157y@Floydian talking about flawed arguments, so because we use other software that maybe spies on users, Microsoft is good now?
Other companies doing evil things doesn't make the evil thing less evil. -
@Qwby I don't think Microsoft would spy a lot since their company's revenue doesn't depend on it much.
Anyways , if u r an android user, u must know what spying actually feels like! -
Qwby4157y@TomRiddle sure do, but I don't use as much Microsoft as I used to, you have to start somewhere, e.g. with the companies known to cooperate with the NSA.
-
For github, Gitlab and Bitbucket. I prefer the UI of Bitbucket. It is clean. Second is github and last is Gitlab. Just my opinion 😁
-
cave8667y@dontbeevil I don't really understand your xamarin argument, it was not like they did it for the users sake or to make it more accessible, they did it for VS and so they get more money out of their paid services.
Besides that, questioning a company's decisions and being careful is not the same as blind hate, I use many ms products, like really a lot, this makes me not a fan, it's just their products are the best for the situation I'm in. And only because I hate their weird bugs, their ignorant defender, their stupid updater, makes me no hater.
I agree though, I quite liked the fact that they made mono open source. -
@dontbeevil @Floydian @kenogo @Qwby Where's the "blind hate" coming from?
I think it's genuinely worrisome that MS wants to buy it.
It's not a secret that all its services are incorporated within the biggest mass surveillance engine ever created and by buying github, it would be integrated as well.
I also find it highly worrisome that someone doesn't find a service becoming integrated within a spying/surveillance network very worrying, since when did mass spying on ordinary citizens become normal?
As for self compiling, I do it as much as possible only a thing called time prevents me from compiling EVERYTHING from source.
My oneplus phone doesn't have Google play services and as long as I use my own DNS server (pihole hosted on one of my dedi's), I can't even access Google (luckily). -
Qwby4157y@dontbeevil it doesn't matter if we compile everything from source or not, the argument that Microsoft collects data and might sell or share them with foreign agencies is troubling to say the least.
I find this argument weird, that you would use other services that may spy on you so you can't criticise it at all, it doesn't make sense to me. Like, I can buy clothes and still find it upsetting that workers in poor counties who produce said clothes don't have workers rights etc. you don't lose your right to criticise something once you buy or use a product. -
cave8667y@dontbeevil This is pretty much blind love for ms. Do you know why vs community is free? Do you actually know, how they are making money out of their "free" services? I'm sorry, but you don't have to cry about the haters who have to "grow up", when you have not grown up enough yourself to accept someone's opinion or when you don't actually know why ms is so hated. Geez.
-
@Floydian Microsoft, Google, facebook, Apple, AOL, Yahoo, Twitter, Amazon and a couple more are required by 'underground' court orders to integrate anything they own/offer as a service so yes :/
And I understand what you're saying about the pointless hate but by keeping on saying that you kinda push away the general argument that anyone could have informed hate towards it imo. -
Qwby4157y@dontbeevil yes, but I don't see a viable alternative to some of the Google products at this point, so I use some of them.
To not use the service I'm using would be too inconvenient in my life, for me personally. -
@Floydian Well I get your point only the last paragraph has nothing to do with this I think haha
-
devnope5397yThat worked out nicely for Skype, didn't it?
After one telco via skype for Business i knew that i won't touch this unbelievable crap ever again... -
Qwby4157y@dontbeevil even if you have to go legacy, you can still innovate. Nothing is stopping them doing a UI overhaul for starters. Or using better codecs, or other things. There are ways to keep your sw modern while thinking about legacy requirements, so it's not unreasonable to criticise that MS maybe didn't spend as many resources as they could have, resulting in sw that feels a bit dated or bulky/resource hungry or unreliable etc.
-
80% here dont know shit about microsoft but its really cool for the comunity here to hate them for whatever reason.. Like the guys hating visual studio yet they know only java or other simpler languagaes not related to vs.. Wtf
-
@Condor how long did it take you to come up with such a sophisticated statement? 5 hours?
So Microsoft wants to buy GitHub... This makes me happy 😁😁😁

do it ms
