I hope GitHub wont restart by random times.

They are buying open source thing but are they contributing to it ?
Converting open source to revenue earning is fine but they are not contributing to it ! Providing bash support for windows is fine, let them provide office for Linux let's see , even if it home edition, I agree they are putting some effort but most of these just appear to as marketing strategy to expand the popularity and not for greater of of society.

And maybe the kind CEO can make private repos available for free. It'll surely help out broke students like me.

@sak96 I'm sorry but WHAT are you talking about? Do they contribute to open source? If I'm not mistaken they are currently the #1 contributor to Github as an organization. They've devoted huge resources to dotnet core which is open source, fsharp is open source, vs code is arguably one of the best text editors available and is open source. Maybe office isn't available on Linux yet but SQL Server is, which most likely a herculean effort compared to office. And again, with their investment in dotnet core, it's likely that soon anything built on .net will be completely cross platform.

You can doubt Microsoft's intentions in the OSS community, but at this point it would have to be based on pure speculation and outdated ideas about what the company used to be.

@eternallyAlone Microsoft ALREADY has free private git repos, it's called VSTS look it up. It's an excellent platform imo and you get access to their entire Release Management platform for free. You can use it to build a full CI/CD platform and publish to any cloud provider you want.

@Condor What argument are you trying to make in the context of the Github acquisition? That this is terrible for developers or Github because Outlook is bad? That unless everything is perfect about everything they do they're not worthy to do anything? Sure they have to make money as a private corporation, but as a developer they already offer me a lot of value for free. How do you think they're planning to monetize vs code or fsharp?

@mclark1129 I know I already have an account. But since most of my public repos are in github I'd like to keep things at one place.

@lun0 at least will not delete the db like gitlab

I'll belive it when they open source windows :)

So when did Microsoft disable ads and telemetry in Windows? If they have such a great consumer friendly CEO this should be a no-brainer.

I'm not even asking them to make Windows open source, but give people the minimal control that they need to turn their spying machine back to an OS.

@Condor They have put thought into it, that's for sure. GH was dying without Microsoft anyways, and they were the ones interested in paying 150% of their original offer for it. GitHub had no CEO, no organization (ironic, isn't it?), and an amazing offer on the table from an org on their platforn with over 2k PUBLIC repos. A laaaarge majority of those are also licensed under a libre licence. They did the right choice.

@eternallyAlone @eternallyAlone they offer free private git repos on visualstudio.com it also comes with few build and release.

@sak96 office is available for linux via office 365. Is the web available on Linux?
  • 1
@Condor Kind of different when you then build a business on top of it

As developers we really should pay more care to stop following groupthink and look at the facts. Companies may have bad track records but companies also change. I understand the initial fearful reaction but wait and see. Either it will be fine, or it won't be, but there are alternatives and new good services have risen and even become better when others died. Plus VSTS was mentioned and it is really amazing.

@WildOrangutan jus@Condor so you upset because this community is going to disappear or something? What is your argument - I don’t see it..

@eternallyAlone If you want free private repos on GitHub you can look up GitHub Education Pack (or something like that) where they offer free private repos for students.

@TonyG This is not the same thing, not even close, the web version is lacking a crap ton of features that some people need in order to do their jobs.

@eternallyAlone github student pack. Thank me later

@gitlab LibreOffice? Google Docs? iWork online? If you’re not happy with that selection, then you can’t be helped. That’s just one of the things you have to accept with Linux.

@DuckDuckWent google docs and i work on line are even worst
  • 0
@dontbeevil What on earth do you need that none of these solutions satisfy you?
  • 0
@DuckDuckWent personally file format compatibility and some advanced excel feature... but if you're not a basic users, you'll find some missing features in online office tools, if you're not use them and will be fine. ah of course you can't use them offline
  • 0
@dontbeevil If you need these features so much, why don’t you just get a compatible OS? It’s not the best solution, but it works...
  • 0
@DuckDuckWent I was talking in general, I have windows and office, I'm not the one who has the issue :)
  • 1
@dontbeevil Oh. Right. Yes, it still is unavoidable to either have macOS or Windows in order to have full office applications. But for casual use cases, online work suites work solidly, imo.
