I officially declare the "Arrays start a {someIndex}" joke a hate crime. At some point you fuckers have to start following the DRY principles when it comes to telling jokes.3

FBI: FUCK!! We just lost our connection to all those civilian routers we were monitoring
FBI IT Department: Did you try turning them off and back on?

Soo.... when does devRant go from Fight Club to Project Mayhem? Will we have to stand outside of @dfox and @trogus's apartment for 3 days?2

I can't earn a stressball in devRant, so how do you like my "Microsoft/Linux/Stressball/Rubberduck/Foam Penguin"?6

Heading to NDC Minnesota for the week. Hopefully going to get a chance to learn some cool new stuff! If anything it will be a break from work and kids, and maybe some time to actually code!
-
So I got a notification that my LinkedIn profile showed up in several searches this week. Not sure I should be too happy about it though...5

After many false starts, I think I may finally be understanding Haskell to the point I could actually be productive in it. It's fun to be interested and motivated in a side project solely because of the language being used to write it!

People: I will never put one of those smart speakers in my home! You're basically just putting in a microphone that will spy on you!
Also People: Hang on I have to grab my phone/high-fidelity microphone/high resolution camera/GPS tracker/Data Aggregator and make sure I have it with me literally everywhere I go, because who knows when I will want to comment on a cute picture of a cat!?13 -
You know what's cool working for a company that uses Github for version control? My contributions on my profile are going through the roof and I expect will make me look like an open source hero!
-
I have a really hard time staying focused reading through legacy code. As a result, I often miss many subtle details about how a given system is currently functioning.

I found out that a major open source project pulled in some of my code for an enhancement I wrote in my own repo. The code was modified some to match the current conventions of the project, but it contains some of my original comments so I know it was based directly off my code. I'm not entirely sure how to feel. On one hand I'm super stoked to know that the maintainers of the project actually looked at my code and included it. On the other, I'm a little bummed they didn't credit me or at least give me a little shout out...2

Last day at my current job, just took my devRant sticker off my laptop. Going to have to get some more to put on my new laptop next week!

My new job is giving me a budget for getting a new laptop, looking for some recommendations on good programmer brands, somewhere in the neighborhood of $1800-$2000 USD (not including tax/shipping). I'm looking at the Dell XPS 15, beautiful screen but poor quality reviews. Also, looking at ASUS Zenbook line. Any thoughts on those brands? Any other brands I should look at? I need to run Windows natively, so MBP is out.14

Just signed the offer paperwork with a new company!! Excited for a great opportunity with great benefits! Had to tell devRant before telling my boss, wish me luck!3

I'm thinking about making the switch to a mechanical keyboard, but I don't know much about them. Anyone have good recommendations on a starter brand that's good quality but won't break the bank?4

Had my first coding interview today, and to be honest I didn't really nail it. Its surprisingly difficult to think clearly and critically when you have two strangers staring at you while you code. This is the 4th step of the interview process, hopefully my overall performance through the process is enough to get me through. Wish me luck (pretty plz)!3

A fully deployed end to end example of CQRS/Eventsourcing using Haskell.... I only get 1-2 hour chunks to work on it sometimes weeks apart! Even then I get bogged down trying to improve my workflow with tmux and other cool Linux tools. 😣

For those of you who can't wait for the next book of GoT to come out, I suggest you read the first few chapters that were generated by a neural network.

The hardest thing that I've had to overcome in my career is the fact that I dropped out of college and do not have a degree. In addition to the personal shame and stigma I felt around being a 'dropout', it also brought along with it a raging case of imposter syndrome. The one benefit those feelings gave me was an almost obsessive drive to constantly improve my skills, which in many ways has proved to be an advantage in a competitive and rapidly changing industry.
After a decade of development, I feel like I've finally accepted that I'm more than qualified and capable of being in my position, and that I actually deserve the success that I've earned. I'm still mildly embarrassed about my lack of a degree, and I generally avoid bringing it up around my colleagues, but overall these feelings take a backseat to the confidence I've gained with each passing challenge and new role.4
